Any guesses at what the purpose was of appointing Jeff Landry as Envoy to Greenland?

Maybe to goad the Danes into buying more F-16s? (In answer to the charge that Greenland has to be defended against China and Russia.)
Other than that, I got nothing. You?

Maybe he is trying to rescue his voters in Louisiana.

If he's in Greenland, he can't be in Louisiana.

Trump saw how welcoming Landry was of ICE in Louisiana so it just made sense.

Would be nice. Trump offered for the US to buy Greenland in August, 2019. The Danes rejected the idea as "absurd."
I just don't see what the purpose of appointing someone without any obvious qualifications...who has a day job...as being Envoy "to make Greenland part of the United States." That's clearly never going to happen.
Trump is a master negotiator. I was just curious if someone knew why he was doing this. Does it help Landry in any way? Who thinks: "I want my governor to negotiate ways to make our state's chief commodity (petroleum) cheaper?"

But then we're left with Bily Nungesser. Who we keep electing Lt Governor to essentially keep him out of the way.

Thanks for the explanation.
Bold prediction: Jeff Landry will make fewer trips to Nuum and/or Copenhagen than Omar the Tiger made to Tiger Stadium. [FWIW, I support Landry more than most here...and I didn't hate the Omar effort.]

Oh no. We'll have to bribe all 20 fat lazy inuits to take over Greenland.

Why haven't we?

It is a strategic piece of ground sitting in the middle of NorthAtlantic/Arctic sea lanes. We are going to have ice breakers built. The Danes have no chance of becoming a maritime power. We are. We need a place to put those ships.

When we played "Risk" as kids, I always tried to place my tokens on Greenland. You could attack all kinds of places from there.

We have military installations there now. Denmark is a NATO country. Why would we need to acquire Greenland to make this happen?
Is Trump just saber rattling to scare the Danes into negotiating better leases for our military installations?

To make Jeff Landry feel important.

This is how government works. Friends get rewarded with 350k do nothing jobs.

NATO is on thin ice. To paraphrase Marco, NATO was formed to defend countries with common ideals and freedom in a perilous time after WWII. We had a common origin and philosophy that go all the way back to the Greeks and Romans who fostered individual freedom in a Christian culture. With much of secular Western Europe now adopting anti-American, censor and anti-American business culture and allowing their national history to be obliterated by immigration, NATO is nothing more than a European benefitting defensive agreement with decreasing benefit to the US. So, if Europe doesn't straighten up, we may not do NATO in the future.
And, Europe is already planning on how to function without the American umbrella.

Because I appreciate the collective wisdom of PoliBoard. If I don't understand something, I ask others if they do.
On the face of it, this was an embarrassing act by our President involving our (for many of us) Governor. I wondered if someone could explain it. The best I have heard is that Trump wanted to make Landry feel important.
You aren't curious about this. Cool.
