Billy Mitchell was the father of our Air Force . He showed in the 1920s that planes could sink ships but the powers that be ignored it all, all the way until the Japs sunk the Prince of Wales and Repulse at Singapore.

As an officer, Mitchell made the mistake of saying what he thought of command as it continued to stick its head in the sand. Result: Court martial.

I remember watching "The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell" (1955) with Gary Cooper on the late-show back around 1978. Everybody I spoke with back then knew who he was and what had happened.

I used to go swimming at Repulse Bay, Hong Kong. I always wondered where they got the name for it, maybe it was named for the ship?

It's a theory. Ship never visited Hong Kong.

I want to know more about the trial of the New Orleans politicians, their liquor trial and sensations.

Great post.

Does anyone else feel sad that there is more news content on the front page of the first image than in an entire edition of what's left of a modern newspaper?

Mammy's Philosophy was a regular feature in the Jackson newspaper. It appeared several times a week. The author was the daughter of a Mississippi Supreme Court justice. She quoted her maid or "Mammy" as they were called back then.

I'm sure she thought she was being nice and honoring her but well, I always wondered what the woman portrayed as mammy thought about it.

Edit: Found this description of her. Sorry if too small.

"Word Puzzles" - crosswords had become a national craze the year before

"Vice Imperils Girls" - right above a cheesecake pic of a movie star

Ha! What do you think?

As for Mitchell, too bad he died before the war.

Most importantly, Was Dorothea ever found guilty of misbehaving with her childhood friend Nooney, and branded with a scarlet letter? Courtland deserved an answer!

Find out next week…

The modern newspaper ends in dot.com. Tons of links there for the clicking.

Here are some of the key HMS ships named Repulse. It may have been named after one of them.

HMS Repulse (1916): A Renown-class battlecruiser, famous for being sunk by Japanese air attacks in December 1941 with HMS Prince of Wales, marking a significant moment in naval history.

HMS Repulse (1892): A Royal Sovereign-class battleship that served in the Channel Fleet and was sold for scrap in 1911.

HMS Repulse (1868): An ironclad battleship, the last British wooden-hulled battleship, sold in 1889.

HMS Repulse (1803): A 74-gun third-rate ship of the line, broken up in 1820.

Repulse (1596): An early English galleon, also known as Due Repulse, recorded until 1645.
