I’m sending my wife and daughter to see a couple Broadway shows for Mardi Gras break.
Is staying close to Broadway in Hell’s Kitchen a good idea safety wise?
Any other suggested spots?

Looked safe to me when I was there.

If this is their first visit, consider the Marriott Marquis or other spot right on Times Square. It’s a pretty cool experience to see the square lit up outside your window.

If they’ve been before, then they’d probably be good skipping that due to the crowds you have to wade through on area sidewalks. As a rookie visitor, I enjoyed it, but that was enough of it.

Hell’s Kitchen should be fine
The Westin at Times Square is where we’ve stayed multiple times

My wife and I recently stayed at the Lotte Grand Palace. We Ubered to Broadway but walked back. It took about 20 minutes to walk. Great location by St. Patrick’s Cathedral and 5th Ave.

Hells Kitchen is perfectly fine and a food mecca these days.

Tell them to get a reservation at Gail’s Broadway Rose (Friedman’s Edison Hotel) before a show. They have aspiring broadway singers as servers that sing the whole time and you don’t have to wait in a long line like Stardust Diner.

I’d strongly consider staying closer or in Times Square OP, any of the Times Square hotels really are a great location for Broadway. Nothing wrong with Hell’s Kitchen at all but it’s a subway/ taxi away at night when Times Square is very easily walkable, a couple of blocks to most. Just consider that taking the subway at night while I would personally consider it perfectly safe, is not ideal for 2 women.

I don’t know the cost difference but our Riu Times Square hotel seemed to be competitive with most of manhattan.

When we stayed this past spring break my wife purchased 2 sets of tickets to shows she wanted to go ahead of time and then went to the TKTS booth/ online for last minute discount tickets. They shouldn’t have a problem doing that for 2 people in February for smaller shows not on the weekends.

I would caveat all of that with it depends on the hotel in Hells Kitchen and the shows that they’re seeing. If they’re staying at the Romer, Belvedere, Washington Jefferson, etc., then they’re only 1-3 blocks from Wicked, Hadestown, MJ, Mama Mia—maybe 5 blocks from Hamilton, and 6-7 blocks from Lion King.
