Three of my buddies and I are headed to Port Mansfield in the morning to fish for a couple days with Joe Prado. Has anyone been on a trip down there? We are all proficient fishermen and I’m pretty jacked up to have a chance to catch a trophy class trout. I will post pictures and a review when I get back in town.

Fished everywhere on the coast of TX except Mansfield, but I know Prado is a stick and yall should do well. Weather has been nasty all down the coast all day today.

Sight casting for tailing reds in the flats off Port Mansfield is one of the most spectacular fishing experiences on this earth.

I went for the first time ever last February with Brett Sweeny. Can’t wait to go back to Port Mansfield. Wasn’t able to schedule a trip for 2026.

So much grass water is so clear. So many fish of all sizes. Just a healthy fishery.

I know little Joe, he is a heck of a stick and great guy. His boat had one pushing nine pounds today. They are wearing them out on top waters right now, hasn't got cold enough yet to kick off the corky bite real good. Weather will be very nice rest of the week which usually means a tougher bite for big fish, I'd much rather it be 60 than 80 down there this time of year. I'm sure it will be a heavy dose of top waters and tails, we thought about heading down there for a few days but going hold off until after the first for some cooler temps. Good luck and report upon your return, take a camera, the bucks in town will blow your mind.

When is it too cold, if ever, for throwing topwaters down there?

I was speaking more to the point of it needing to be colder for a good corky bite. We fish down there mostly in Jan and Feb to maximize our chances for a extra large trout, it will get pretty dang cold down there when a strong front hits, you start getting water in the 50's and the top water bite falls off pretty good. My best down there which was almost 10 was on a day neither the air or water hit 50, along with on and off drizzle, that is corky weather.

I’ll post a full recap of the trip with pictures when I get home, but we had two unreal days of fishing. I broke the dirty thirty this morning with a 30 1/4” 9 pound trout this morning. Overall, our four guys caught a 9, a 7.7, and six more fish over 6 and almost all of them were on top water. We all broke our PB’s.

He was shaking more than me because I didn’t know how special the fish was until it hit the board. He’s a great dude to fish with.

You can go on Joe’s instagram or Facebook to see a bunch of the other fish, it’s a very unique fishing ecosystem and the deer down there are ridiculous, my god. The first day, the bucks were chasing does between the houses and cars like they were not even there. We are talking about 150+” inch deer.
