ESPN: Michigan has commissioned an investigation into its athletic department

The University of Michigan has commissioned a full investigation into the practices and culture of its athletic department, centering on how numerous scandals have both occurred and been handled in recent years, a source told ESPN.
The firing of football coach Sherrone Moore this week will be a particular focus.
The investigation will be handled by Jenner & Block, a Chicago-based law firm that has done business with the school in recent years, including conducting the investigation into whether Moore had an inappropriate relationship with a staff member.

This is the latest in a series of scandals that have hit both the athletic department and the university as a whole. It includes a federal indictment in March of former offensive coordinator Matt Weiss, who is facing 24 charges of unauthorized access to computers and aggravated identity theft.
Prosecutors from the Eastern District of Michigan allege that Weiss ran a vast, multiyear effort to access the personal accounts of thousands of NCAA student-athletes across the country. He is charged with targeting specific female athletes to access personal and intimate photographs and videos.
Some of the alleged crimes, the feds say, occurred while Weiss was working inside the school's football facility, Schembechler Hall from 2021 to 2022, and during a previous stint with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens.

The series of scandals have put a spotlight on athletic department as a whole, including director Warde Manuel, an alum and former player for the Bo Schembechler-led Wolverines of the late 1980s. Manuel has been on the job since 2016.
A high-level meeting of university officials was held Thursday evening, sources tell ESPN, leading to intense speculation about Manuel's future, but he remains on the job. The university would owe the 57-year-old Manuel, who signed a new five year contract in December of 2024, about $6.75 million if it dismissed him without cause.

Something tells me the university hired the law firm to dig up cause.

They hired a law firm to investigate Moore and his side piece. The idea that Manuel is the only Michigan power broker that knew about this is gonna be hard to sell.

There’s been other scandals under Manuel’s watch. Michigan hired a gymnastics coach, then fired her after a few days when it was revealed she knew about Larry Nassar’s seedy behavior with the national team.
They also fired their hockey coach after it was discovered the university had hidden years of abuse, sexual hazing, and sexual abuse by the team doctor.
Juwan Howard punching another coach.

It will result, somehow, in systemic racism being at fault even though the AD is black and the black head coach engaged in sexual harassment of a white subordinate.

I believe this is a diligent act by Michigan. They probably should have done this two years ago, but it’s definitely now due.

I feel like they are too close to handle this. Not exactly a neutral party.

Michigan is wrought with corruption and scandal. No one does scandal like the Big 10

Almost certainly but he'll be a fall guy. They don't get to the level of launching an investigation in the head coach with an outside law firm and nobody above the athletic director knows about it.

For all their arrogance, they really have led the way in the biggest and disgusting scandals over the last 15 years

They’ll find a couple of scapegoats, fire them, shite on their names and pretend like every past, present and future problems are nonexistent. It’s the Big Ten way.

Not to mention they turned up nothing in the initial investigation of Moore and the girl.

Well…at least they appear to be “doing something”. Big 10 mate Pedo State covered up child rape for decades.
