Diamond Baseball Holdings in MiLB…thoughts?

This group has rapidly bought up minor league franchises. I realize that a minor league team can be a profitable venture, as parent franchises pay for contracts, equipment, etc. That leaves Diamond Baseball the opportunity to take in on tickets, concessions, merch, and the like. My local team was owned by the Astros for a while, and I noticed that it was ALL Astros. They didn’t do any throwback to previous minor league franchises and things like that. They just announced today that Diamond Baseball Holdings is taking over.
I think it’s bad to have one organization own such a large percentage of these teams, I haven’t seen major negatives in these smaller markets. Anybody else have any thoughts?

would not be shocked if MLB and clubs would like to get out of minor league baseball altogether
let someone like that group handle it for all teams going forward

I'm not a fan of it. Fortunately they're capped on how many teams at each level (or in each league) they can own, at least for now.
They've mostly bought up franchises that had previously been owned by the major league clubs. They're moving teams around and getting new ballparks built in some areas, but in general I don't think private equity in sports is a good development for fans.

95% because it's PE.
In general, it's non-local ownership in the community. It's continuing the trend of treating the organizations like a commodity. It ultimately turns into another way to squeeze every buck out of someone rather than foster the next generation of baseball fans.
It's essentially Rob Manfred's wet dream.

There is another group of investors looking to own around 20 clubs that are in the market too

I have a buddy that works for DBH. I've talked to him about this and DBH has absolutely no ownership of the players. The players and the decision to promote/demote them all comes from the MLB teams. DBH ultimately only owns the stadium, tickets, promotions, etc. For the most part, they don't really own the stadiums as a lot of them are on county property so the county that the team is in owns it.

Of course.
The group is only interested in making money. Minor league ball can be a very profitable venture. You aren’t responsible for paying players or running day to day personnel decisions. You don’t buy equipment, and don’t own the stadium. Tax dollars will maintain the facility.
Basically, you “own” the franchise, hire a company to run concessions and merch. Sell. Profit. Oh…and maybe raise tickets and parking?
As long as asses are in the seats and you have a creative marketing team, you’ll make money.

My cousin was an owner of the Zephyrs. He made money, but not like you’d think. That’s why you see groups like DBH buying up as many as they can.
Whether or not it’s a good thing, I’m not sure. Minor league baseball is as popular and fun as it’s ever been when done right.
