My parents house off Sherwood (OT Poors) got broke in a few weeks ago. The guy got in, was in my parents bathroom washing his hands when dad woke up and confronted the guy. Said it was his girlfriend’s house. They said he acted drunk/ high/ drugs. Thankfully the parents weren’t hurt while dad escorted the gentleman out of the house and proceeded to call the cops.

Cops get there and say he’s broken into 3 houses down the road with the same story. They actually catch the guy a few days later and bring him to their house asking if they want to press charges, with the caveat that he’d probably be in jail for less than an hour, or let him fix what he broke/ apologize.

When they relayed all this to me I was confused how it was even an option. Is this SOP in law enforcement?

TLDR: home broke in, cops ask to put the guy in jail for an hour or let him fix it

I would say this is right on par with BRPD.

Grandkids stay at their house all the time so his pistol is locked up in the closet. He’s since put an unloaded revolver on the bedside table hidden from the kiddos

Sounds like the cop was just being lazy and didn't want to have to deal with writing an arrest report and bringing the guy to jail.

If they actually said this, then he has got someone powerful on his side to pull some strings and get him out of shite every time he gets in it. No one can get you out of jail that fast unless BRPD won’t charge him.

ETA: The sad fact of the matter is, your parents will never feel safe in their own house again. Have an alarm installed on their house ASAP.

What's the point in that? He'd be better off with a baseball bat.

Damn straight. My gun would have been in my hand before my feet even hit the ground. Soon as I opened the bathroom door and saw him, it would have immediately been 3 rounds center mass before a word was ever spoken.

And before some smartass comes back with “ oh sure you would tough guy”, I have already been in this scenario. When I was 18, was up late watching TV, heard something outside. Looked out door to my carport and saw some jackass in my truck trying to jack my stereo. Grabbed my gun, busted out the door and held him at gunpoint til the cops got there. Only reason he was still breathing is I caught him outside my house and not in it. Every fiber in my body wanted to pull that trigger so I have no doubts had we been in my home I would have smoked that fool.

So he hides an unloaded revolver? What's his plan, throw it at the guy?

Well he doesn’t want to have a loaded gun accessible where kids can find it. And it was like 3am when the guy got in so it was dark. The idea is a deterrent. They are older and aren’t going to beat anyone with a baseball bat

Man I've heard a lot of dumb gun ideas in my life but the hidden unloaded revolver serving as a deterrent is up there.

Get him a bedside gun safe for Christmas.

Or an alarm system.

Or even a magnet wall mount in a high and hidden spot, like a closet. Simple to do.

No, they just know the DA and judges are feckless/complicit.

It’s the entire US judicial system in a nutshell post-COVID

I don't understand this sequence of events. Was he in your parents' bathroom washing his own hands by chance?
