Why only one season?

Because suits in the entertainment are mostly coked out narcists ignorant assholes with zero talent.

See Firefly and Men of a Certain Age for exhibits 1 and 3, with Freaks and Geeks as exhibit 2.

Bill Haverchuck is the GOAT of that show and the montage of him after school is GOLD.

It got bad ratings. Lot of “critically acclaimed” shows don’t have long runs.

I only caught it afterwards because they didn’t push for or promote it , as best I can tell. The schizophrenic nature of Studios. They’ll green light something and then effectively tie weights to it and let it sink.

Damn all star cast across the board.

Met Michael 'Squints' Palledorous at a minor league game a few years back and asked him about that. He blamed it on the network constantly moving the air dates around and it never gained a big enough audience because people would never know when it would be on.

Oh man. I don’t say this lightly, but it’s one of the best shows of all time. It’s that good. I’m jealous that you get to experience it for the first time. And it still holds up today and its messages still ring true.

Bill Haverchuck GOAT scenes.

That’s exactly what happened. Caught it midway through its run and they moved in to two different nights in that short time. They ran it in slots that were competing with COPS (which was widely popular at the time) and game shows. NBC also didn’t think it was “happy” enough.

MTV offered to revive it but the budget they offered wasn’t sustainable.

There’s basically a sequel season in spirit called Undeclared. It’s worth a watch but not as good. Has some of the same cast.

I'd never heard of Freaks and Geeks until my wife bought the box set on DVD.

We spent a weekend watching it. Such a great show.

So many memorable moments that still pop into my head years after watching it; most of which involve Bill.

Easily top 5 show ever for me. Can't tell you how many times I've watched it. Episode 16 "Smooching and Mooching" is probably my favorite single episode of TV ever. It's just incredibly perfect.

Pretty much everything is cancelled because of ratings, but NBC sabotaged their own show. They not only aired the show and different and random times, but often times it was aired completely out of order. So even if you'd find the show, you might be watching something in the wrong order. Which unlike a typical comedy where each episode is a stand alone, this has numerous running storylines as well. They also promoted it as some wacky teen show and not the grounded show that it is.

Just an overall piss poor job on NBC's part to make it successful. Either way, it stands on it's own as a really really good season of TV.

Rewatching the 7 minutes in Heaven scene again right now. I think that may be my favorite scene in the whole show. Bill is the fricking man.

Man. I could go into detail why I love that episode so much but don't want to spoil anything for the OP. But you go 15.5 episodes of just wanting nothing but good things to happen to such a good guy and it never really comes... until those 7 (and more) minutes. Glorious.

Sunday nights they were up against FOX animation and X-Files, Monday nights against Who Wants to Be a Millionaire when it was huge.

You're talking about an hour long dramedy that wasn't really drama and not really comedy.

It's also when Tivo was just starting out and very few homes had DVRs. People were still time-shifting with VHS. No one knew about it until it aired in repeats on cable channels.

I think it came on Saturday nights when their target audience were doing what high schoolers typically do on Saturday nights back then. Go out.

Haverchuk is one of the greatest TV characters of all time. It was always the simple lines that cracked me up.
