Anyone else scared of heights?

I woke up one morning and thought it would be a good idea to go tandem skydiving to overcome my fear of heights. I ended signing up for the highest altitude possible at 18k feet and immediately regretted it when the plane took off.

The instructor lied to me when I backed out, and we ended up flipping out of the plane first.

Now I’m more scared of heights than ever. Any better ways to conquer your fear of heights?

I suggest not conquering your fear of heights by means other than relying on a parachute to keep you from high velocity impact on a solid surface. Perhaps, jumping off a bridge attached to a bungee chord would be better fit. I’m not afraid of heights so much as the fear of impact. I ski and love to test my fears off cliffs and jumps. But, snow is way more forgiving than earth or water.

I fly to work and from work every three weeks on a helicopter. I enjoy the mountains as often as possible. My wife and I skydived last year. To answer your question. Yes I am. But life is short and lots of great things are high up!

Sky diving actually helped me overcome my fear of heights. You sound weak.

No but I have become very claustrophobic as I’ve gotten older. Just jump in the MRI tube…forget that noise.

Good point. I don’t think the supplemental oxygen they were giving us helped much either. Thought it was a prop for part of the “thrill”. But makes sense and helps you calm down when going to 18k feet in a single engine prop plane with an open door.

Yep, I've had anxiety attacks while driving in high altitudes. Once I was with a group of friends that decided to climb up into a fire tower. About half way up I chickened out

I know it’s cliche, but don’t look down. I’ve been up on a manlift 150ft up multiple times while it’s swaying around. That shite sucks. Also went with one of the owners of our company in his plane when he purposefully stalled it and alarms started going off while it was just standing still mid-air. No thanks. Never again.

Yes but it depends on the situation
I’ve hiked the grand canyon about a dozen times and never felt uneasy
There’s a trail in glacier that’s very narrow and In my opinion very stressful - and I got about 1/2 mile and turned around.
I won’t do the glass ledge in sears tower or similar
Flying has never bothered me
Helicopters can bother me if a high level of turbulence is involved

It’s not totally irrational to have some healthy fears.

Not so much scared of heights, just concerned about the sudden stop at the end…

As I’ve aged, I certainly have a new fear of them. I used to climb a 20 foot ladder with no issues whatsoever.

You just got to keep exposing yourself to it.

I used to be terrified of snakes - embarrassingly scared.

Then I started just grabbing them. Now I’m not scared of snakes.

I wouldn’t be able to do my job if I was.

Have faith in your safety equipment/self will help you look past it.
