New to TD, but have been absolutely loving it. Read in the newcomers post that I could ask for advice, I just moved back home after getting out the Army. I posted this in one other thread but hoping to get more eyes with a thread.
I live in CENLA, don't have the money for a lease or anything, just trying to see what all you guys to do optimize your hunting on public lands. Just looking for advice, sorry if it's a dumb thread.
***UPDATE*** went to Elbow Slough this morning. Have been here since. No one was hunting it but I took the advice given from this thread. Walked about 0.75 miles from the gate according to my Garmin. Set up in a thicket that was adjacent to an open field on one side and a slough on the other. Brought me a sandwich and decided to stay out all day. Don’t know if anyone came after me but around 12:30 a 4 point walked out and I smoked him. Wish I knew how to upload pictures but thank you all for the help and advice.

Depends on what you're hunting for. Deer is best first 3 weeks of bow season theyn the last 3 weeks.
Small game can be really good.
lots of wood duck opportunitys for sitting on a hole and jump shooting.
However there are NO woodcock on any WMA's in LA.
most have hogs galore. Near you Bayou Cocodrie NWR has a ton.
A poster on here tags out on deer every year between ft polk, peason and dewey

I need to talk to that guy lol

Best advice I can give is get the Onx app so you have clearly defined boundaries. Find some spots where most people aren't going to go due to distance or terrain. Go there. The last couple of weeks of the season when the casuals are burned out is money.

Gotcha. I have a WMA like 5 minutes from my house that buds up against a high fence hunting club and I have been wanting to get out there. Really just worried about catching a stray from a trigger happy guy

Isn't Fort Polk in Vernon Parish for military ?
AI search:
Fort Johnson (formerly Fort Polk) offers hunting in its Fort Polk-Vernon and Fort Polk North Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) to authorized personnel, which includes deer, squirrel, turkey, and more. Hunters must obtain an annual permit from the U.S. Army, follow specific regulations for each WMA, and consult official maps for open areas, as hunting is restricted when military training takes priority.

90% of people hunting on WMA's never go past a mile to hunt.
70% of those people only hunt opening weekend of whatever season.
Do the work and walk deeper into the WMA, and you'll be the only one there.

Makes sense, I pulled up the LDWF website and Google Maps and have been scouting what looks promising. I'm off this weekend, probably going to make a trip in the all this weekend lol

I pass through Kisatchie on 167 north of Ellick on my way to my camp. See trucks pulled off the road every mile or so. There is tons of public land there to hunt and I see some hammers get killed there every year. Don’t know all the rules or regs, but that’s where I would start if I were in your shoes.

I appreciate it. And yeah I know exactly where you are talking about. Going to look at LDWF see what their regs are
Posted on 12/4/25 at 10:16 am to BabyDraco1499
Probably need to check federal regs too. It’s owned by the federal government. Don’t know who actually makes the regs as I’ve never hunted there. I only stop to pee at the campground on the right occasionally.

Yeah it would be my luck to get in Federal trouble because I was ignorant even though I look into it

Thanks for your service

Yeah the LDWF pamphlet will have the WMAs (state) and Kisatchie (federal) hunting dates. NWRs have separate dates on their respective website
Some of the WMAs with highest hunter success rates are on ground near you and have full time “green suiters”

No way? I didn't even know that. I'll look into it. And rn is the only time I want to talk to a green suiter, just so I can ask him the what's what lol

Indian Creek WMA has good hunting.

I feel like the WMA experience would be better for most if they went to a lottery system.
