The first photo shows people from Italy mostly. Notice, no Italian flags!
My grandparents were young teens during the period of "Open Immigration" and were motivated to assimilate into American culture all the while retaining the thought of where they came from. They were motivated to learn English, be prosperous and not dependent on government for their livelihood. These people were mostly all Catholic, and practiced their religion openly.
In short, they were European Christians, seeking a better life, not unlike the first settlers in the 1500's.
The second photo is a picture of invasion.
