Mel Gibson is working on a new miniseries about one of the most epic battles in Christian history, the Great Siege of Malta (1565).

Fewer than 700 Knights of St. John held off an Ottoman force of nearly 40,000, fighting to stop the fall of Christian Europe and decide the future of the Mediterranean.

A story of courage, faith, and impossible odds, finally coming to the screen.

Shut up and take my money.gif

If Ken Burns did this, 600 of the knights would have been black. The other 100 would have been Native American Indians.

We need a modern day re-enactment.

About 300 years too late, so no.

They never weren't. The first crusade came after almost 500 years of muslim invasions of Europe.

The1565 Great Siege of Malta is considered a final and pivotal event of the Crusades.

And if you went by what every movie says about the crusades, then the poor put upon Muslims were the enlightened good guys while Christian Europeans were mindless savages.

The last actual crusade ended 300 years earlier, but fine.

Their running narrative to this day, and curiously, our schools do not teach any contradiction to this. They study the Crusades, but never what led to them.

Both sides were neither good nor bad. It went back and forth with atrocities. You had good kings on both sides and blood thirsty tyrants on both sides. It went back and forth so many times.
What most remember is leaders like Saladdin and Baldwin allowed religous pilgrims from all three faiths in Jerusuleum. The 1099 siege when the Christians won they famously killed off many of the Muslims and jews. But the 1187 reconquest by the muslims they spared the Christians. So many people think in that term mostly. But there were many more back and forths.

The French Revolution was almost as bad and the Muslim Invasion and Protestant "Reformation". All leading to the loss of countless souls.

I've been there. Valletta still looks like a medieval fortress. Highly recommend a visit there for all you historians. They have roman catacombs (tiny people) and an aqueduct that runs along the main highway to Valletta. Beautiful island and full of European ex-pats for drinking buddies. You can spot an British observation tower every mile or so. Gozo is a crazy spring break island in the summer. Valletta is a very clean and safe city on an island full of beautiful rocky beaches. Mdina is a must see as well.
