Good hire, but no better than James Franklin.

Off to read about this guy so I can pretend to have an informed opinion
ETA:
ok, this guy's ability to recruit outside of this area and specific types of demographics seems risky
2001 Eastern Arizona (DB/ST)
2002 BYU (GA)
2003 Southern Utah (RB/FB/TE)
2004 Southern Utah (OL/FB/TE)
2005–2008 Utah (LB)
2009–2011 Utah (DC/LB)
2012–2014 Utah (AHC/DC/LB)
2015 Oregon State (AHC/DC)
2016–present BYU

i don't know about that... granted, i think they'll still be in the same situation with him as they were with Franklin, but i do think Sitake is the better coach, especially X's and O's

I guess working for Mormons isn't that different than working for the Penn State cult, just more lucrative

He’s been at BYU for 10 seasons now. He’s taken BYU to 4 10+ win seasons, and now 3 11+ win seasons this year included. Including 22-3 record over his last 2 years. He’s BYU’s best coach by far since Lavell Edwards.
It would be a pretty solid hire for Penn St, although Franklin was fired for 10-2, and Sitake would likely do the exact same thing there. 9-3, 10-2, not able to beat Ohio St, Oregon etc.

Mormon church gonna pay up?

Easily the weirdest hire of the cycle if it comes to fruition
Posted on 12/1/25 at 3:16 pm to lsufan0582
It's still really weird to me that Polynesian Mormon Kalani Sitake is from suburban St. Louis, MO.

Seriously.
A Tongan Mormon who's worked in and around Utah almost exclusively going to Happy Valley.

First big Mormon settlement in Missouri and they think Eden was in Jackson, County Missouri.

Seems like a great coach and fit at BYU.
Trying to think of a good analogy though. Like Ed Orgeron going to coach at Harvard or something. Just a weird fit

BYU has scheduled an emergency team meeting

Yeah, but that's still a ways away from Kirkwood.

if Brigham Young, himself, could create a HC....

The best part is he will be the first Tongan-American to coach in the Big 10. Best reason to hire him.
