Common sense about Matt McMahon

I know we don’t do much common sense around here, but Matt McMahon is a very solid basketball coach who catches a lot of flack because he doesn’t show a ton of emotion on the bench. He inherited a bad situation courtesy of Woodward and had to start his LSU tenure during a historically good period for SEC basketball. He’s far from perfect but he’s put together a much more competitive roster and the SEC is not loaded like the last several years. It’s still tourney or bust for McMahon but this looks like a tourney team to me!

Wait until the team plays someone with a pulse and come back to this thread.

I am hoping for the best; this team actually has some good talent.

I was surprised to see them beat DePaul by 30 yesterday. DePaul isnt some great team but they arent terrible either.
But with that being said I've been fooled by the soft pre conference schedule before thinking we were better than we really were so im not believing they are any good until they win some conference games.

He's much more animated this year and that's a good thing.

He’s 14-40 in SEC play ,name me one other SEC school that would let their coach have that bad of a record and still retain him. Thats ok because cupcake season is coming to an end. I hope I’m wrong but the sports media picked us to finish 15th out of 16 SEC teams and I think that’s about right

Pretty sure they lost to teams without a pulse last year... like Pitt and SMU.
But it's fine that KM beats all these trash teams by 50+pts.

He was getting on his team for lazy defense when they were up by 30. He’s definitely engaged. He also hasn’t had the financial ability to go out and get better players. He was this year. Anyone can see this team is way better than any of his previous teams. This team would destroy those teams. The basketball IQ alone if this team is off the charts. They legitimately have 8 players that can score, play defense, pass and rebound . They have great length and size. They are much more physical than his previous teams and now have 2 PG that can run the offense. Next week will tell us a lot starting with BC Wednesday but based on eye test they will compete and hopefully pull out some wins.

We've blown out lesser teams this year that upset big programs before playing us. None of our wins have been in doubt.
Who knows what happens in the SEC, but saying all of our games have been against terrible teams is not factually accurate and the take of an ignorant person who hasn't watched this team play and knows nothing about college basketball.

If McMahon becomes a successful coach at LSU, I can't wait to rub it in all the naysayer's faces. He started with nothing and has now built a competitive team. It is not easy making headway in this environment. The hate McMahon crowd has been relentless in their hate for him. I wish him and the team all the luck in the world!

This is easily his best team but we still need to wait and see what happens in SEC play. The Q3 wins in the Emerald Coast tournament are pretty encouraging though

I hope one day we all find someone who unwaveringly supports us in the face of all objective evidence like the 5-10 ardent McMahon supporters.
He catches a lot of flack because his W/L record is AWFUL at LSU. His sideline demeanor is seen as part of the cause for that, not the reason most don’t support him. If he were winning at a high level he could literally sit down and never say a word during the game and fans would be just fine
So far, things look better than they have in prior seasons. No one should deny that. But you can’t ignore the schedule to date has been incredibly weak and we’ve seen 2 of his 3 teams totally tank in SEC play after double digit wins in the non-conference portions. If he continues to win this year he’ll continue to earn more of the benefit of the doubt. But objective, reasonable people are taking a “show me” before I believe approach. That’s pretty rational.
If you want to be optimistic, great, there are some objective reasons for that. But to say it’s “common sense” that the reason for the poor 3 year record and negative opinions regarding him as a coach is simply because of a “bad situation” and his lack of emotion on the sideline is absurd. Frankly, it’s the antithesis of common sense.
He doesn’t get support from most of the fanbase because his on the court results haven’t earned it. But like with EVERY fanbase, winning cures all. Continue to win this season and you will start to see the perception change

UNO was not a cupcake win. Neither was UCF. And we’re beating the sub par teams like we should. I too want to see how they do next week against much better competition but anyone who can’t see that this team is different from his others knows nothing about basketball.

This is definitely more his style of team (I think) than the ones he has been constructing.
Less athletic and less one on one scorers and more of guys that play in the system he wants. Dedan might be the answer to all of Matt's problems on the offensive end.
And I am still worried about the defense going against the SEC teams, but they looked improved over the last 2 games so that is encouraging. Once we unlock Robert Miller, they guy of the last month or so last season, then I think we could really could start to have some promise.
Also since I have been hard on CMM in the past I'll give him even more credit so far this season. Nwoko is a much better player on the offensive end then I thought he was. Hopefully that continues during conference play.

Every new HC “starts with nothing” now. That is the nature of college basketball today. Hell, in year 4 McMahon has fewer returning players than he had in year 1.
Find a new excuse. This one stopped being relevant or rational 4 years ago

And go back and look at the games last year against the top ranked teams in the SEC. We were competitive in those games until late in 2nd half. AL, Auburn, Fl, Tenn. The only reason we lost those games was they had more talent and size and better PG. Not the case this year.
