This drama would have (mostly) been avoided if the NCAA didn’t have such fricked up dates and kept expanding the playoffs. Someone else suggested starting the season earlier, but it has to end in time to sign players to start the Spring semester. Problem is, games in mid-August in the South would be almost unbearable.

They’ve almost boxed themselves in chasing mo money.

Saban is responsible for ESD being a thing so he is at least partially to blame for the calendar.

It’s really the early signing day and transfer portal. If Dec 4 wasn’t next week, the urgency to move now wouldn’t be the same!

At this point, just start the season in July and end it before the academic calendar. It’s the only way this gets solved.

Downvote away, but if you think the academic side will ever work with the athletic side

I like Rick Neuheisel’s idea.

Signing day: February
No spring ball.
Transfer Portal: Opens at end of spring semester
Have summer OTA’s before fall season instead of spring ball

It will be interesting to see if the NCAA makes changes. It might be called the Ole Miss rule. If NSD and the portal dates were pushed back, LK could have coached the team to their one or two and done, and not had all this animosity.

I don’t feel bad for the university, such are the fortunes of war, but for anyone that’s ever played organized sports, you have to feel a little bit sorry that his relationship with his players is going this way. I think that bond is why he’s playing hardball on having his cake and eating it too.

Get rid of the conference championship games, expand the playoffs to 16, and make it Championship December culminating with the championship game on January 1. Make New Year's Day great again. Start high school signing and the transfer portal about a week later.

Sure, you could push them back but then guys aren’t enrolled in classes and can’t be involved with the team. You can’t exist in this era without spring practice. Most teams are barely together for a year these days.

The coaches are 100% to blame for the current calendar. They wanted an ESD. The NCAA didn’t arbitrarily create one. The coaches also wanted the spring portal eliminated, and they didn’t want the portal open in December during bowl season. However, they DO want the portal opened early enough to allow new transfers to enroll in time for the spring semester to allow those players to participate in winter/spring workouts.

Save the bullshite that the NCAA created this. The COACHES did. And quite frankly, the calendar infrequently affects about 15% of teams per year. There’s no reason to throw the baby out with the bath water because ONE major conference HC (apparently and unfathomably) is choosing to bail on his CFP bound team.

I agree but then the regular season games need to be scrutinized and adjusted so that the top programs play all the top schools in the conference.

Can’t have teams sneak into playoff without a strength of schedule matching the other selected schools.

Maybe the group of 5 schools have play in games!

I mean it could have been avoided if Lane would have been more decisive. You don’t just leave for a division rival and expect to just hang around until you are ready to leave. That’s not a practical expectation.

This has been a very public courtship, during the season. You can’t flirt at this level and not expect to hurt feelings.

Blaming deadlines and playoff expansion is silly. Those dates are there to encourage or even enforce decision making. And if you want to leave for greener pastures, you may just have to miss a playoff run.

with climate change in full effect, there’s not much difference between August and September anymore. Summer has extended another month in the last decade.

I guess my response is so what if it happens. The playoff is expanded by 4 teams. Teams like this will be seeded something like 13-16 and will have to play an away game at the 1-4 ranked team. If they happen to win, maybe they deserved to be there.
