The City Council’s far-left majority is pushing the Big Apple into a “communist dystopia” with Stalinesque legislation designed to control how private property is sold — and penalizing owners $30,000 if they resist.

The “Community Opportunity for Purchase Act,” or COPA, forces sellers to let “community land trusts” and other nonprofits providing affordable housing make first offers to buy residential buildings with at least three units once they’re on the market – and then match competing private-sector offers.

quote:

The bill would install new bureaucratic hurdles for already beseiged property owners. It is modeled after similar programs already in place in other left-wing cities like Washington, D.C., and San Francisco.

quote:

Residential building owners would be required to notify the NYC Department of Housing Preservation and Development and a yet-to-be-determined list of “qualified” nonprofits before offering the properties up for sale on the open market.

Nonprofits interested would have 60 days to notify the owner and HPD of their intent to purchase and other 120 days to make a “competitive” offer. If a nonprofit doesn’t show interest, or the offer is rejected, the owner can sell the building on the open market.

Building owners violating the law would face civil fines of up to $30,000.

So from a buyers perspective, anything semi affordable will be bought up and placed into government programs. The people who own properties around government controlled housing will sell to avoid living next to section 8. The government will buy those properties and the cycle will repeat.

This is all they want.

A 30k fine.

Some Arab selling his 60 million Park Avenue penthouse will such up the 30k as a cost of doing business.

Nothing is going to fundamentally change the realities of the NYC real estate market long term…

They voted for this. Let them experience it to the fullest.

Anything that’s done can be undone once New Yorkers come to their senses.

Oh please let this happen. Nothing would be nicer than seeing smug, white libtards, who pay a shite ton for their apartments, have to share the same building with ghetto trash, like Tonisha, Tyrone, and Manuel. They will whine so much, yet vote for same candidate.

If the offer is coming from a minority-owned or minority-focused group (which
a lot of them will probably be, just for this purpose) then they're going to get sued to frick and back by the city for engaging in discriminatory practices.

See: New York City Human Rights Law (NYCHRL)

In essence, the seller can be fined:

-up to $100k for a single violation
-up to $250k for compensatory damages (the emotional harm part maxes at $50k)
-up to $100k in punitive damages
-up to $50k in legal fees for the plaintiff

Now take all of that and view it through the lens of a Mamdani administration running the show.

That sounds like the perfect way to collapse the real estate market there. And that is their plan. I am so glad that I dont live there or have any investments there.

They are so screwed.

Maybe? What happens once the money flees and infrastructure goes to shite? Is there a point of no return?

Hopefully not a Fed bailout.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what will happen.
