When you're enjoying turkey w/your more liberal relatives, tell them that the first Thanksgivings during early 17th Century were greatly affected by climate change, and led to the events in the Crucible.
Tip: You can start the conversation with "well actually, Barb"
The Little Ice Age brought very cold conditions to the North Atlantic region just as Pilgrims crossed to the New World in the early 1600s.
Why? Lower solar activity (Maunder Minimum) and major volcanic eruptions cooled the Northern Hemisphere by 2 °C, shortening growing seasons and increasing storminess. More/worse hurricanes in a colder Atlantic ... (bet you didn't know that, Barb).
(Aside: discuss the massive "climate fueled" hurricane that led to settlement of Bermuda by Jamestown relief expedition)
Little Ice Age cold or "climate shock"
Roanoke struggled in the late 1580s,
Jamestown endured the deadly “Starving Time” winter of 1609–1610 with 80 % mortality,
Half the Mayflower passengers died in the harsh 1620–1621 winter. Very harsh!
Shorter growing seasons due to climate change of -2°C (pre-industrial by definition)
--> Repeated crop failures from late spring and early fall frosts forced colonists to abandon Old World wheat for Native corn and rye. Locals helped teach them corn
Brutal --> during coldest phase of the Little Ice Age (1680–1730), renewed harvest failures and economic stress in New England contributed to heightened social tension.
Climate change directly led to the 1692 Salem witch trials.
--> America’s earliest history was thus shaped by a prolonged, natural episode of global cooling and the adaptation, and even some witchcraft.

Nice summation...and suggestion.
I believe that the book of Genesis accurately states history. Yes, Thanksgiving discussions with Liberal family members are fun.

Listen Barb, in this house we believe in science, men cannot become women no matter what they pretend their pronouns are.
It's quite simply mental illness and sexual deviancy, I will not stand here and let you talk about your gender fairy in the sky religion.
Michelle Obama is a perfect example...

Or just not be a douche and leave politics at the door. Glad my family aren’t made up of a bunch of children. We all disagree, but it’s never once gotten between us or brought up at thanksgiving.

In that period of years the colonists of what is now called New England had various laws and customs regarding marriage. One of them was 'Marriage Season'. When your marriage was approved you set your wedding date for Fall. That's because a Fall pregnancy would result in a Summer birth. If your baby was born in those extremely cold winters there was a higher chance of death.

Interesting info. Amazing how much we take for granted and what they had to deal with and plan out

I bring this up every time a stupid libtard preaches this crap to me.

If you're still giving your lib family the time of day you're doing it wrong.

Until the late 1800s, most Americans outside the large cities married cousins, too. It was a consequence of limited travel and transportation ... limitations still in play in undeveloped regions of the world.

better idea, dont discuss politics at Thanksgiving.
My family managed to pull that off for decades.

and when we finally do, we discover we actually have a TON in common.”
One need look no further than this forum, to see the way that Trumpists react to any perspective differing (however slightly) from their own worldview.

one could also not be a dildo and bring up politics at what should be a celebration of friends and family

But transportation infrastructure in much of the undeveloped world is not much better now than the standards of the 1800s.
The simple fact is that you are less likely to marry a relative if you travel, and more likely to marry a relative if you never go more than ten miles from your birthplace.
It is what it is.
