HONG KONG (AP) — A fire spread across seven high-rise apartment buildings in a Hong Kong housing complex, killing 13 people and leaving others still trapped, the city’s fire services said Wednesday.
Nine people were declared dead at the scene and four others who were sent to the hospital were later confirmed dead, authorities told reporters. At least 15 others were injured, and about 700 people have been evacuated to temporary shelters.
The raging fire sent up a column of flames and thick smoke as it spread quickly on bamboo scaffolding and construction netting that had been set up around the exterior of the housing complex in Tai Po district, in the New Territories. Records show the housing complex consisted of eight blocks with almost 2,000 apartments housing about 4,800 people.

Video from the scene showed multiple buildings close to each other ablaze, with bright flames and smoke shooting out of many of the apartments’ windows as night fell. Authorities said hundreds of firefighters, police officers and paramedics were deployed, and video showed firefighters aiming water at the intense flames from high up on ladder trucks.
The blaze started mid afternoon and after nightfall authorities upgraded it to a level 5 alarm, the highest level of severity, the Fire Services Department said. The fire was still raging late into the night, and authorities said conditions remained very challenging for firefighters.

Bamboo scaffolding is a common sight in Hong Kong at building construction and renovation projects, though the government said earlier this year that it would start phasing it out for public projects because of safety concerns.

UPDATE:
HONG KONG (AP) — Hong Kong’s deadliest fire in years blazed late into the night on Wednesday as the city’s leader confirmed at least 36 people, including a firefighter, had died and another 279 people were reported missing.
UPDATE
ETA: at least 44 dead and 279 reported missing. 3 contractors arrested

Authorities suspected some materials on the exterior walls of the high-rise buildings did not meet fire resistance standards, as the rapid spread of the fire was unusual.
Police also said they found Styrofoam materials -- that are highly flammable -- outside the windows on each floor near the lift lobby of the one unaffected tower, believed to be installed by a construction company. “We have reason to believe that those in charge of the construction company were grossly negligent,” said Eileen Chung, a senior superintendent of police. The three men arrested, aged 52 to 68, are the directors and an engineering consultant of the firm..

One of the top cities in the world and bamboo scaffolding is still in use.

Imagine if that was what was going to be used on the upcoming state capitol work. That fire would be seen for MILES!

Bamboo scaffolding is a traditional construction support system using bamboo poles, prized for its lightness, speed of assembly, and low cost.
It is most famously still in use in Hong Kong and Macau, where it is valued for its efficiency and cultural significance, though recent safety concerns have led to its gradual phasing out in public projects in Hong Kong.
Advantages
Speed and efficiency: Bamboo scaffolding can be erected and dismantled much faster than metal scaffolding.
Cost-effectiveness: It is significantly cheaper than metal options, making it a favored choice for builders on a budget.
Sustainability: Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resource.
Flexibility and strength: It is a strong and flexible material, capable of withstanding compression and withstanding harsh weather.
Disadvantages and safety concerns
Safety risks: Recent incidents, including collapses and a fatal fire, have raised significant safety concerns about its combustibility and susceptibility to deterioration.
Inconsistent quality: As an organic material, bamboo quality can be inconsistent, which can impact the structural integrity of the scaffolding.
Skill and regulation: The craft requires specialized skills that are becoming rarer, and although regulations exist, the potential for accidents remains a concern.
Current status
Hong Kong: While a cultural icon and still widely used for renovations and minor work, the Hong Kong government is gradually phasing out bamboo scaffolding in new public projects due to safety issues.
Macau: Bamboo scaffolding continues to be used in Macau, where it is protected as a form of intangible cultural heritage.

There’s an intersection of costs on a graph somewhere.
It will show the cost of bamboo being much cheaper than metal intersecting with the cost of apartment fires and scaffolding failures.
The math will
Always win.
Bamboo should be used for flooring and whipping people when they are bad on far east countries. Scaffolding? Probably not.

I saw this on the news this morning and they said the scaffolding had caught on fire. I wondered how the hell scaffolding could catch on fire; it all makes sense now.

TBH, I'm impressed they can make that work at all.
