According to the Coast Guard, around 6:36 p.m., they were notified about a possible downed Cessna aircraft that lost contact with the Lakefront Airport approximately 4 miles over Lake Pontchartrain.

The Coast Guard has launched a helicopter and a boat to search for the plane.

The owner of the plane, Michael Carastro, tells WDSU he is on the way to the airport from Gulfport. The plane is registered to an aviation school in Mississippi.

Looks like spatial disorientation may have taken another pilot, possibly a student.

They really do. We other branches talk a lot of shite to them, but it's all in good fun. 99% of the time the rest of the military isn't doing much of anything, and the CG is always out there. God bless those guys.

Looks like the cloud layer was really low at that time. Around 800’…. If this was a student and CFI, I hope they were doing instrument training bc no PPL training should have been held in those conditions.

Yeah, dumbass weather day to be out in for training in a tiny plane.

Hope for the best for the people involved.

They are carrying out drills all the time and I'd trust their coastal rescue abilities more than any US gov't agency.

Exactly, and these factored in over a large lake with no visual references is a deadly combo. They probably didn't know what happened until they hit the water.
