Our utility room door opens in. It’s really inconvenient and takes up space. Can I change the hinges and make the door open out?

Please be sure to include all smartass comments with any helpful ones. Wouldn’t be the OT otherwise.

Absolutely, turn them upside down and the door will now open outward

Thanks Chad. My sister and I will be doing it. My BIL is completely useless and would just start it and monitor for 6 months.

You should put saloon doors instead. That would be cool

Yes, you just need to get a mortise hinge jig and create new hinge recesses on the other side of the door jamb, likewise move the strike plate to the other side.

Yes. Pull off the molding, remove the door from the frame, remove the frame, reverse it, and reinstall the door. Reinstall the casing and then recaulk and paint.

There should be plenty of YT videos, but make sure they aren't videos for changing the swing, that is a more common change.

Realistically, the easiest path is to buy a new door with a frame and pop it in. Generally, it's a way bigger pain in the arse to do what you're thinking. Just getting hinges to match and hang the same is a pain.

Doing a new door insert is a 3 hour job (not including caulk drying and painting of trim) if you know what you're doing or have a helper who does (you'll need a helper and a damn good and patient one to hang, plumb and level a door with new hinges). You'll need to practice your routing skills too, because if you frick up, you're going to be installing a new door frame regardless.

But you may be one of the lucky ones who can do it with minimal work. Buy a lottery ticket if so.

Sister’s husband is a Cali boy. So, he’s an idiot with very few “man” skills.

Don't Do It...
Buy a new Prehung or a cheap Accordant door that you just screw in place...
