Conference championship games need to be put out to pasture in college football

Let me preface this by saying I know it won’t happen because these conferences are still making money off of these games. I want to say that now because I know that’s the first comment that the mouthbreathers will make.
They are now obsolete in this age of college football with a 12-team playoff (which might expand again eventually to 16 teams). In a perfect world, they should go away.
Georgia has a scenario this year where they might get rewarded with a “double bye” for finishing third place in the SEC. They’ll avoid the SEC championship game against a top 5 team, but they’ll still finish in the top 4 in th CFP rankings, thereby giving them a 1st round bye in the CFP as well. This is a retarded scenario that shows how useless the conference championship games are now. All they can do is either hurt teams with an extra loss or reward teams for not making it there in the first place. It also causes more injuries for the teams who make it.
Some might argue that they allow a 3 or 4 loss team to have a chance to make the playoff, but we don’t really want that in the first place, do we? We want the 12 best teams and the best playoff matchups.
I say do away with conference championship games and just go back to co-champions of conferences like we used to have years ago. That’s what will allow the best conferences like the SEC and Big Ten to get the most teams in possible with the highest seedings possible, and with the fewest injuries possible.

I’m against this opinion

LSU fans are always finding things that aren't fair to complain about.

College football sucks these days
It was better pre playoff
Its all about NIL mercenaries and which program has the most billionaire donors to write fat checks
Conferences used to make sense and conference titles used to matter

No. I just find it weak minded and stupid

All of this...And EVERY game, as the Playoff was built into the Season. Now? Oh, we lost to X team? We'll beat them on the next try....see Ohio State-Oregon last year...ah, memories of great victories meaning nothing... That's what the impatient wanted, instant dissatisfaction is what we got.

Very compelling argument you make. Pithy.

Indiana/OSU will be borderline meaningless. Watch the two coaches just play it close to the vest. I wouldn't blame them if they sat guys.

OP is correct and it’s not an outlandish opinion. But we’ll all pretend like it’s a crazy idea just to be edgy and snarky.
If the top teams are better off by not playing in a championship game, then yes it’s a needless game. The SECCG is no longer a goal. At most it’s a stepping stone but just as often it’s a nuisance in a 12 team playoff.

Exactly. Both teams are in the CFP no matter what. Better seeding is not enough incentive to risk injury and have less rest and prep time.
Imagine the outrage if a star QB is injured in the game. You think either fan base would say “well that’s just the way it goes”? No, the fans will be enraged that the star player was even in a meaningless game.
NFL teams routinely rest starters at the end of the regular season if their playoff spot is set. Foolish not to.

I've been saying this since the expanded playoffs.
The only reason they still exist is TV contracts.
IF, big IF, Ohio St beats Michigan, they should rest everyone vs Indiana.

Whoever runs college football should:
A) Eliminate conference championship games entirely and move straight into the playoffs after the season
or
B) Create conference “play in games” between the 3-6 and 4-5 teams in the conference to battle for playoff berths that are played in addition to the conference championship games (which is what I think will eventually happen)
In the current setup, there is no reason to want to play in a CCG. Coaches competing for a natty would rather rest up their guys than play an additional grueling game against a top level opponent. CCGs used to be the de facto play in games in the BCS and 4 team era, but now that it’s expanded they are no longer needed. They have become like conference tournaments in baseball and basketball where it’s cool to win, but the top teams aren’t going to over exert themselves to try to win the conference when they have sights set on a natty.

If you're already top 4 or a bubble team you have nothing to gain from playing and would prefer not.
Georgia and ole Miss are happy not being in it. That's silly.
The NFL doesn't have an AFC East championship game. The big playoff and conference title games don't mesh well

Not a bad idea. Protects the higher-ranked teams already in the playoffs, and gives TV meaningful games to broadcast. Win-win.

I always thought divisions should be eliminated and 1vs 2 should play the ccg in each conf. Then the playoffs should be the top 4 after that.
That way the conferences actually have something to do with the playoff system and it’s not this dumb shite we currently have.
Probably not enough money in that though.

I disagree, OSU hasn’t even been to the conference title game in 5 years. Indiana never has and the game is in its own state. Conference title games in hoops have always been hard fought
