Bradley's a defensive mid, but holy crap... he was awesome. What a great game. Sacha Kljestan plays defensive mid as well and he was, er, kind of awful last night. Pearce was almost decent which for him is outstanding. Boca was surprisingly shaky all night long.

A lot of uneven defensive performances by pretty much anyone not named Frankie Hejduk. Yet we didn't allow a goal because Howard is awesome.

Dempsey is in mid season form and he played lousy last night. Beasley's been in terrible form and he had a terrific game. I don't think the status of the season is as big of a factor as you think.

Really, my biggest complaints with the lineup is Ching and Pearce. Those two bring nothing to the table I know Dolo is hurt right now, but we couldn't play Califf? And I don't understand how Cooper can't even make the roster.

I agree with your points about Pearce and Dempsey. Both had poor games. Dempsey looked frustrated all night. Great result though.

this is always the excuse for a coach playing the older guy instead of the younger, more talented, better guy

Completely false. Dempsey had a solid game last night. He was always in the right spot and his touches were never wasted. He was extremely efficient with the ball.

Looks like an assistant coach from Mexico decided to continue the dirty little mexican stereotype after the game.

Frankie's mellow as hell. I got to meet him and most of the other US players prior to a friendly vs. Chile in San Diego circa 1998.

He's just as happy surfing the left at Swami's as he is
shredding Mexico's left flank.

As for Dempsey, he still falls down too much looking for a whistle when he should be playing through the knocks.

From goal.com's player ratings

quote:

Ching – 6 (off 83)
Cements his place in the team with each passing game. Buildup play is fantastic. Draws fouls in dangerous areas. Puts himself about to create space for others. A tireless worker. Would have done more with better service.

What am I not seeing? keeper07 correctly pointed out that he is a target man, but I watched him the whole game, and other than two fouls that he earned, he looked like he was in the way more than anything. I am completley biased toward Altidore, but I can admit I was wrong (as I was about Altidore's run in the 85th, again corrected by keeper). Someone just help me see why we continue to use him as an option.

I didn't read this whole thread and my the game went 5 minutes past my DVR recording (so I missed the 2nd goal), but was the fight in the tunnel afterwards mentioned by anyone?

quote:

But that was nothing compared to the scuffle in the tunnel after the game. Hejduk and Mexico assistant Paco Ramírez got into a shouting match as the teams left the field, prompting Mexican striker Guillermo Franco to push into the scrum. That started a near riot between the teams near the entrance to the U.S. locker room. The incident ended when a half-dozen giant security guards had to step in to separate them. It may have been an episode of emotions running high after a big game, but you can bet players on both teams won't forget it, especially when the U.S. travels to Mexico City in August.

Wow, Mexicans losing their composure and acting like little bitches after blowing another game to the US? Who saw THAT coming?

God, how great would it be if the US could pull out a win at Azteca? They'd probably get so upset that they'd storm our borders and try to illegally enter our country en masse..nah, they'd NEVER do anything like that.

Sounds like Hejduk was really cool about it:

quote:

"I was just trying to pump the crowd up [as he was leaving the field]. I was actually saying, 'F*&% yeah!' I think they thought I was saying, 'F*&% you.' It was a misunderstanding and I can see why they would be a little bit upset if they thought I was saying the other one, which I wasn't. At the end of the day, no one was hurt. There was a little love tap and that was it. I still have my face. No damage done. It was fun. That's just how emotional this game is and that's how passionate they are about their sport. It was none of their players -- I want to make that clear to everyone."

I would seriously fear for the safety of our players. And I'm not saying this in a joking manner.

Someone from the US team would get hurt or shot.

If Sven was still the coach too.....he would get murdered if the US beat them in Azteca.

Almost certainly. Do you think a Mexican in the U.S. might do it if he saw one of the players?
