This isn’t a rare occurrence

75% of the time I order from anywhere I either have incorrectly made or missing items

I normally half-arse check my order when I get out to the car, but I think I am going to start cracking it open right on the damn counter in the restaurant, because everyone seems to either be an idiot or not give a frick

Yeah I know stop being fat and lazy and cook yourself and whatever, but I’m just so tired of people not being able to get simple shite correct

I just want what I paid for

Many "to go" customers don't tip, so the workers don't give as much of a shite as they do when you eat in.

How are you placing the order? Over the phone, online, in person?

What type of establishment is it?

Communication breakdowns. Poor use of the English language. Bad listening skills. Poor job training. I could go on and on.

Online mostly, rarely over the phone

Usually actual restaurants, some local, some chain, like Walk-On’s, Chili’s, etc

Online mostly
people have difficulty transliterating - which is most likely the problem

Chances are the online order does not go directly to the kitchen - a host/hostess or manager probably receives it over the system and they just enter it incorrectly to the kitchen

Not saying kitchens don’t make mistakes but pretty many restaurants have expeditors to check the food with the ticket

A server will usually double check an order after an expeditor does - but a to go order is not going to get checked like that

I have a large family and ‘if’ I order take out, I call it in because it’s usually read back to me and I can make sure it’s at least correct from the beginning

You would think online would make things easier but apparently not

Going to have to start calling and ordering in person and will see if that makes a difference I guess

Convenience is too good to be true

you are assuming people read well

Not only do they have to be able to read but then copy what they read and write/type/enter it correctly somewhere else

And of course that is contingent on you putting your order in correctly in the first place

Bc tbh there are 8-9 of us in this house and the only place that consistently would get our order wrong was 5 Guys

Tipping to go orders is a totally different discussion, but when your order is wrong 75% of the time, tipping 15-25% (common range of suggested tips) before you receive or eat your often wrong/untimely order, it goes against rewarding a person for that service they provided during your meal.

Good point. I can't recall, however, the last time I had a screwed up to go order. I would suggest that screwed up to go orders are often caused by people who are too stupid to order correctly or by those who make overly and unnecessarily complicated orders.

I'm not talking about asking for no pickles and getting pickles, I'm talking about missing an entire entree or getting the wrong thing.

75%

Because this is the approximate percentage of complete dumbasses you are dealing with in any restaurant takeout situation.

More than half of the adults in the US cannot read above a 6th grade level.
What can you expect?

The honest answer is that our hiring pool sucks. As an operator i cannot stand over the 20 employees i have working at any given time to try and compensate for that. In my case, I have 17 year old girls who wish they had their cell phones handling my to go. I know you are spending a lot of money but the guy selling chicken wings and beer isnt undoing the behaviors of the modern teenage girl with a couple weeks of training. The next thing you have to worry about is that the delivery business has been taken over very low skill people. The amount of problems that comes with them is astounding

I order online a decent amount, and I’ve rarely, if ever, had the restaurants mess up my orders. I’m just lucky I guess.
