Tinned fish/seafood...

I've always enjoyed regular grocery store sardines, tuna and salmon, but lately I have become more aware that there are lots of premium options available of all kinds of fish and seafood. I'm sure they have always been out there, but I've never thought much about it.

I ordered a sample pack from Fishwife recently. I've been looking at a company called Lata that seems to have more premium options.

Anybody else on FDB gone down the tinned fish rabbit hole? Recommendations welcomed.

This guy is what really piqued my interest...

I've been curious about this too. I've found a few brands at Publix that I really like, but even those have that "tinned fish" fishiness to them that's a bit off putting. I can eat them on crackers or with a little mustard or something.

But people online talk about these higher quality brands as if they're a best kept secret in the culinary world.

The Portuguese are big into canned fish. I have not sampled any of it, but they like it.

I like a tin of sardines or kippered herring now and then.

Yes they carry the Tonnino brand of tuna in jars. It's the first thing I've bought in a store that seemed to be a little bit of a step up.

I made Serious Eats Pasta Al Tonno with it and it was delicious.

Trader Joes has tinned smoked mussels. Purchased but haven't tried yet. Also have smoked salmon and trout.

I forgot I did try TJ's mussels recently. I liked them but I think they might be better to me on some buttered toast or bruschetta. Doctor them up a little bit. I have some of the smoked salmon too but haven't tried it yet.

The undisputed king of gourmet canned seafoods is Josephson’s in Astoria, OR. I will not visit Oregon without visiting Josephson’s. Every item there is excellent, but I have a particular love for their sturgeon. And if in person their fresh smoked salmon and hot chowder are better than anything you can find in Seattle.







Their items make perfect Christmas presents as well as dinner party gifts. If you are on a budget, however, it is hard to surpass Walmart’s Great Value label smoked oysters. Whether eaten alone, on a GV saltine, or added to a dip, at $2.50 — a price that has doubled in less than four years while Josephson’s has remained constant — you will be hard pressed to find a better dollar to dollar rival.

P.S. I have read good things about Great Lakes Tinned Fish, which to my knowledge is the only fish tinning company in the Great Lakes. When visiting the UP, Leland was always a must stop for us for its delightful fish town. We regretted that we could not bring home edible Christmas gifts from the smoke houses there. But now they carry this new canned fish and will try it next time we are there this coming May.

There was a restaurant around here several years ago that served dishes exclusively from high end tin seafood from Spain . It was good but too much of a niche concept to survive.
I do buy smoked mackerel at Whole Foods that I make sandwiches with and recently started putting in my scrambled eggs.

N7 in New Orleans started out as basically just this. They sort of morphed into a more French/Spanish Mediteranean bistro and I don't think have any more of the tinned stuff on the menu.

I ate them and liked them but then I noticed they were Chinese oysters and decided it aint worth the risk.

Nuri brand is a good one.

Sardines in peppers is fantastic.
