Mainly about their childhood growing up?
Not to draw on but I thought it would be fun to share old times. Hunting fishing living. I have some that bring me back to the 60s. First duck hunt in a rice field outside of Holmwood La. I grew up with family that were rice farmers later going with beans. My youngest memories were of me chasing combines in the fields and waiting for them to unload and bring everything to the dryers. What a time for a 5 yo. Fast forward to high school and me skipping class to head to the field when a cold front moved through south Lake Charles. Racing out to see what was moving and figure out what we could crawl or call in. A bit nostalgic for this evening. Just missing my home ground and my dad.
What a time to be alive.

Yeah. The custodians of the OB
It’s ok. Just felt like story time. I hate taking away from the riveting ballsistic discussions.

I remember a very cold day in N LA in the Bouef River WMA, before it was named, on a great duck hunt. Traveled way down the River to Grassy Bayou. A friend and I set up in the edge of the wood, waiting on the sun to come up so we could get after em. Started killing a few when a single came over the spread. My friend stood up and killed it stone cold. As the bird was falling, a huge Bald Eagle swooped out of nowhere and grabbed the falling bird in mid flight. We were flabbergasted! Just looked at each other and said “did you see that”! I don’t know that we ever told anyone because we didn’t think anyone would believe us. My favorite thing about being in the woods is that you never know what you might experience.

Thanks man. Memorable for sure. Can't tell you how many times I've had a hawk hit a duck decoy and everyone says, What the hell?! Did you see that?

I used to hunt with this guy Kenny, near where you started to hunt. He worked hard to help us build these kick arse blinds in the marsh south of Lake Charles. But the guy couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. I had to kill his ducks for him. Don't tell Green Jeans on me.

Absolutely. Some of my Will spawn memories are not of the animals that I was fortunate enough to take, but the ancillary things you experience while an a duck line, perched in a deer stand, or walking through the woods and fields. It is my church, and it always has been.

I’ve got many fond memories fishing and hunting with my grandparents, Gassoway, then Yucatan and Bayou Bonne Idee. One particular time I was hunting with my grandma near bayou galion (Franklin hunting club maybe?). She always had a coffee can heater with toilet paper and alcohol to keep warm. A decent buck stepped out in the lane and she adjusted to get her gun up, kicking over the coffee can, spilling the alcohol, and setting the floor of the stand on fire in the process. Good times!

As a long time whitewater paddler who's slalom raced all over the place, even making the US freestyle team, I was pretty use to getting critiqued and watched. But this summer as I was surfing this river wave that's exactly what happened. An eagle landed in this tree directly above me and stayed perched on a limb looking down the whole time.

Was probably his hunting spot, and not just me, but it got everyone's attention.

Side note: We had already seen him a couple times that day and made the star of a bunch of photos... so we we're kind of acquainted.

Seems like we get good stories around Christmas and when a blue norther is blowing in.

I live on a lake in East Texas. We are in a very small subdivision on an otherwise undeveloped, wooded cove. About two or three years ago a pair took up residence in the area. Now it is not uncommon for us to see the pair at some time during the day. And we have seen as many as four and at times five. It blows my mind I live in a house, in a place where among the sparrows and cardinals and red bellied woodpeckers, I get to see bald eagles often. And in my own yard.

I don't like it when there are four or more around. Don't want them fighting for territory.

Grassy - Some friends and I went one year when everything was frozen up except the bayou (if I remember right it was 7 degrees), we rounded a curve and about 2,000 mallards got up flying in the spot light. They were in the bayou because the water was moving, the woods was all frozen up.

We sat up right there and had the best duck hunt of our lives other than freezing, we were in my dad's bass boat with burlap tarp over it.

The ramp was iced over and the only way to get out was to back as far as you could down in the water, then get a running start.

Back in my younger gung ho days.
