I know it's old news, but did BK think he had more time?

The day he was fired, I think everyone was shocked. Most of all - Brian Kelly. Do you think he thought he had at least another season? I feel like he likely assumed the buyout was too high and that he'd be able to try to right the ship in another season... maybe 2. Do you think he ever saw it coming? Napier probably saw the writing on the wall at 22-23 over 4 seasons. BK was 34-14 and was likely looking at a total collapse. But maybe he thought he'd be able to rebound and piece at least a 9 win season together.

I just wonder what he thought when Woody dropped the "Coach we're letting you go."

My take is that he was looking to get fired. If you look at how ill prepared our team was, it was obvious to me he didn’t prioritize LSU football nor his job.

Even our players looked lethargic. Low effort. Costly penalties. You don’t have that kind of thing when you’re prepared.

Regardless, glad he’s gone and we can move on

He had to know it was a possibility after A&M took over the stadium and he was probably relieved to not have to deal with the pressure anymore.

I think he was very surprised. I think he thought lsu didn’t have the stomach to pay that big buyout.

Brian Kelly was the result of a bad long term contract with everything guaranteed...He had no reason to work or want to succeed

BK checked out last year before Florida. He was just counting his days 'til his tenure at LSU ended and he could ride off into the sunset with his millions. He could not care less about winning football games and probably thinks we did him a favor. Fat Scott getting fired was lagniappe.

More time for what? Playing golf? He sure wasn’t coaching.

idk man, a&m is one of the most penalized teams in the country. The team always played with effort until the second half of the a&m game

He thought this team could make a run to the playoffs, but after the Vandy loss, he probably began to feel the heat from the fans and media. He had to know if things got worse (which they would) there was a possibility he could get fired. Everyone knows when they aren't liked. He had almost no support after the Vandy game. The A&M loss sealed it because he lost the locker room. His post game interview after the a&m game was a man that was out of ideas and had no answers for getting embarrassed.

I think he knew by game 5 this was at best a 9-3 team. The Vandy loss was the end really. He never had these kind of standards at ND or anywhere else. I hope LSU never gives another 60 year old a 10 year contract. Incredibly dumb idea.

Yes. Largely because of the buyout. That was and still is a BIG number.

Despite what anyone says in the postmortem, I DO NOT believe Woodward's intent on that Sunday morning was to fire Kelly. I think it was to force Kelly to make some changes to, at least, appease the masses/boosters to get through the season.

That's when egos took over. BK wasn't going to let the AD force him to do anything with HIS team. Woodward responded by getting pissed and the situation quickly devolved into a spot where Woodward felt he had to fire Kelly immediately.

For better or worse, if BK would have put his ego aside and made the offensive changes to appease everyone he would still be coaching right now (though there would be talk next season is a win or go year). He didn't, with the result being both parties landed simultaneous knockout blows.

His plan was to be terminated without cause and get his retirement. That’s it.

Based on his termination letter that was released, he either constructed it in such a classy manner, knowing everyone would read it, or he was truly ok and relived to be terminated.

I actually feel like when he took the job, in his mind he was the greatest coach in the world based on his results with ND and how he was hamstrung with higher recruiting standards. All he needed was better talent and he thought that was the key at LSU. You still have to coach. Maybe harder because even though these kids are gifted athletically, they still need discipline, structure and reinforcement. It is constant coaching on the field and off, being there for them (he was disconnected and distant), and on their arse one minute, hugging them the next. Watch Saban coach during a game or practice. Watch Kirby Smart coach. BK stood there talking to his assistants on his headset with the occasional outburst on the sideline to a player. Yeah, he was surprised. Surprised he still had to work, and maybe even harder, to earn that championship in the SEC.

I was a huge Brian Kelly fan. He dropped too many turds in the punch bowl at LSU.

1 - 3 in season openers... Each of those losses can be attributed to Kelly. One signature win... bama. Losing record to college station, TX, with the most unforgivable being his first season.

Good riddance.
