One of my overhead garage lights went out. I assumed it was a fluorescent light. I open the cover and see it’s an LED. Figured that I could just disconnect the LEDs and replace it. Nope. Have the replace the entire fixture. Working overhead to replace an entire fixture for what should be an easy swap of a fluorescent tube is a giant pain in the arse.

LED is cheap, easy, energy efficient and honestly a one off that the light went out.

You’re making it a pain in the arse more than it is.

Yeah, and I’ve been in this house less than 4 years. It was a new build. I thought these LEDs were supposed to last like 20 years.

Went 100% led when we rebuilt our house after Laura and love it other than the garage leds that come on when they want to.

No, I’m not.

I like LED bulbs. I don’t have any problem with LED as a technology.

I have a problem with having to spend a whole lot more time, energy, and expense for something that should be easy.

Either that’s a one off fluke bad fixture or you have something else going on.

Bad fixtures happen with fluorescent fixtures too

dude a garage entire fixture is probably $40 and takes 20 min to install.

Like I said if it’s installed correctly and you don’t have any other issues going on, it will be there still burning the same when you pass away. And will burn about 1/10th the energy and hate

We renovated a house in 2018 with all LED cans. Over the 6 years, I have replaced a handful but we sourced them from a reputable online company and they replaced them for free (under their warranty). Not only did they replace the single light but they would usually send me a 6 pack. When we sold the house I left maybe 30 brand new lights in the attic.

Did you pick the fixtures or did the builder?

The builder. This house was nearing completion when I bought it so I didn’t choose anything myself.

Maybe a one off, but the electrical components that regulate the diodes can be extremely sensitive. Trying to match recessed LED cans can be a pain in the arse versus bulbs.

The builder.

Guaranteed he bought the cheapest fixtures that would emit light... at least until it was sold.

Not really the point. Having to work overhead on a ladder to unscrew the old fixture, disconnect the wiring, measure the holes on the new fixture and realize they don’t line up with the old one and having to drill new holes, strip the wires because they don’t give enough to work with, trying to hold the new fixture as I’m reconnecting wires overhead, lining it up and screwing it back in. It’s a huge pain in the arse compared to replacing a bulb.

agree

But when a fixture goes bad they have to be replaced.

Do you think if a fluorescent fixture went bad, that changing the bulb would somehow make it work?

I think you’re misguided

In my old house, where I replaced CFL bulbs with LED bulbs, I didn't have an issue after I my first/second gen Cree bulbs died and were replaced with cheaper ones; didn't replace an LED bulb for six years.

Buut, the house I'm renting now (two years old) has the entire goddamned fixture as the light, rather than just the bulb. I hate that shite, because replacement is unnecessarily complicated (I know it's not rocket science, but it's also not 20 seconds on a ladder). Builders and subs pull from inventory that may have been sitting there for two years exposed to Texas humidity/temp fluctuations (the house I built in 2014 had a microwave with a production date of 2011 installed in it, for instance.)

Sounds like you don’t do a good job picking your house if this upsets you
