Yes.

I had two toilet tanks bust within a month of each other. We were home for one and at work for the other. No telling how bad it could have been if we were on vacation.

Yes, once had a backflow preventer pop when we had an surprise early season deep freeze. It started shooting water up in the air that landed right in one of the window wells for my basement. Fortunately this window was right next to the sump pump and it started pumping everything right back out. Minimal damage. It's a simple thing that can save your a$$ if something goes wrong.

No….but I should. I had a coworker take a month-long vacation. His water heater busted sometime during that month and steam and water permeated the house. He came home to water pouring out of his front door. Insurance pretty much totaled the house.

Absolutely. I turn my water off if I'm gone for even 2 days.

Anything in the upstairs bathroom decides to let loose I'll be in a world of shite.

Also sometimes hit the breaker for the HOT water heater.

If you shut off the water, you should always kill the breaker to the water heater.

If a leak develops and siphons water out of the heater, you will have burnt out elements and possibly thermostats.

Turn off the water and cut the breaker to the water heater. Many water heaters have a vacation mode these days

No for whole house shutoff because garden watering is usually still on. I do minimize possible problems by shutting of laundry water in case a hose busts. Good neighbors keep an eye on things.

I usually do. Came home after Christmas one time to a small puddle in my basement. An o-ring on an upstairs sink water supply line had given out, and it was a very slow drip, but that was enough for me to remember to turn it off when we're away. Somehow it didn't cause any sheetrock damage, just dripped down between the walls and out into the basement.
