Some things are considered so universally repulsive and unjust that satire doesn’t apply. We generally don’t satirize the murder of children. We might satirize the perpetrator and find it funny ( Springtime for Hitler Mel Brooks style) but we don’t really see organized mass murder of children because they are Jewish as worthy of satire or parody. And that’s good- because those kind of cultural agreements complete the moral thread. So if you told me an Anne Frank joke over beers we might laugh at the subversive nature of the joke but we agree that it should be an underground sentiment. We do that about all kinds of things because we are moral animals and we value moral consensus.

I think the murder of Charlie Kirk and what it represents is EXACTLY the kind of thing a healthy culture should consider beyond parody. And probably-at this exact moment in time-even more important a lesson for our culture to process. It is a moral moment so CLEAR and so STARK in its implications, that to take the opposite side is to declare oneself a moral barbarian.

Let's write the book and put it in our schools.
