Hello everyone, heading to Charleston for the first time next weekend for a concert in North Charleston. I’m traveling solo and looking to tap into TD’s collective wisdom as i've done successfully in the past.
Concert is Saturday night, and I’m flying in either Thursday or Friday and heading back Monday. I am leaning toward staying downtown. Any recommendations for a good 4-star-type hotel that has a little scene/social energy would be appreciated.... older crowd 40ish up, single ladies.
Same ask for restaurants: places with good food, a solid bar scene, and not packed with college kids. Open to higher-end spots as well as more casual places.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Charleston Place is a very nice place to stay. Pricey though.

Renting a car or planning on walking/Ubering your way around? That will influence some dining recs
In town I would suggest Fleet Landing for a good meal on the water and either Kaminsky's on North Market or Carmella's for dessert. I'll leave others to chime in on Hall's, SNOB, Poogans, etc.
Have heard good things about Lewis Barbecue but have yet to eat the there. We are partial to Melvin's/Bessinger's but those are either across the Cooper in Mt Pleasant or across the Ashley on Savannah Highway or Folly Beach Road. Rodney Scott was good when we went but I've heard it can be hit or miss. If you go get the whole hog sandwich to get some pork skins.
If you have a car you should check out Bowen's Island Restaurant. Great view over the marsh and good food. We also liked Page's Okra Grill in Mt Pleasant, but they just recently got the busted passing off imported shrimp as fresh/local.
If you make it as far out as Isle of Palms, Acme is good. Boathouse at Breech Inlet is ok for a slightly higher class of menu options but we've been once and that was enough for us.

Hotel Vendue
Nice hotel right in the middle of town with a couple of nice bars, including one on the roof.
Many excellent restaurants nearby, including
FIG
SNOB
Anson and
The Peninsula Grill.

Husk: the Charleston restaurant. I don’t care if people say it’s past its prime. I went recently and it was wonderful
FIG is good.
Chubby Fish is an absolute must but you’ll have to wait in line early to get table for later. It is worth it.

Emeline Hotel is nice. Great service and location. Poogans Porch and Lewis BBQ are very good.

At the Vendue rooftop bar?
Single ladies in the 50ish range?
I don’t know. That is a little young for me.
They actually do attract a lot of younger people in their 20s and 30s also. 50s as well.

This is half correct. The view is amazing. The food... meh. This isn't just at Bowen's though. The shrimp are battered with flour and maybe have some salt added. Other than that it's bland.

The majority of "local" food is not my cup of tea.
Charleston has what I call "white girl food". Looks great with a beautiful view but doesn't taste great and is expensive. That being said, I've been ruined food in Louisiana that tends to be heavily seasoned.
Charleston has a heavy northern influence in that there are a lot of transplants that restaurants cater to.
Theres one louisiana style restaurant (LoLa's) but it's not my cup of tea either.
My recommendations, from personal experience, are as follows:
Heavy's burgers
Lewis BBQ (Texas BBQ)
Tavern and Table (Shems Creek) - Italian
Reds Ice House (Shems Creek)
High Cotton
Island Cabana
Sorelle - Coffee
Duck and Dog - Casual Bar (wings)
Taziki
Naan
Lg's by the creek - casual bar
I plan to go to the following places:
Palmira
Chubby Fish
Pages Okra grill
Obstinate Daughter
Charleston Harbor Fish House
Bad Daddys Burger bar
Poogans
Tiki Taco
Places I've been and wouldn't go back
Rancho Lewis - Expecting superior style upscale mexican. They went too upscale.
Taco Boy
I haven't found a good sizzle plate since I've been here. I have at least 2 more months before I leave.

Stayed at The Pinch when it was brand spanking new and loved it. Don't miss 167 Sushi and Lewis BBQ. Thought Husk was fine, but FIG was way overrated.

I originally missed this thread, but there are some good reccos in here and hopefully the OP found some of the other threads on this subject. Curious what you actually ended up doing and thought.
A few things I always recommend:
- Finding some time to check out other cool spots in the area that are off the peninsula; Shem Creek is easiest and one of the closer islands/beaches is fun too (though obviously better in the summer)
- Vern's; I've always loved it and now it has a Michelin star. For some reason it doesn't get mentioned in the same company as many of the other better known spots, which I guess is fine
- Chez Nous also falls into that category and is a uniquely Charleston experience; small menu but awesome
As for where you (OP) could've met single 50 something ladies...I probably would've suggested at the bar of some of those nicer restaurants or the bars in general. Lots of roving groups down around Meeting and E Bay.
