Former Louisiana House Speaker Clay Schexnayder indicted for theft of rare state artifact

The board, which was displayed at the State Capitol for decades, vanished from Schexnayder’s office last year as he was ending a 12-year term in the House, the last four as the Republican speaker of the 105-member chamber.

I know a little about this. Shortly before it disappeared a dissendent of Walter Stebbins (Julius Mullins) asked Schexnayder to see the board displayed in his office. Mr Stebbins who purchased Lyons Cypress Lumber Company (later Lyons Lumber Company) in Garyville, La and ran it as a lumber yard until the early 1970"s. Mr Mullins asked Schexnayder to see the board displayed in his office late last year.
The board has been moved around from Speaker to speakers office over the years when the state remolded the state capitol building.
Mr Stebbins donated 3 pieces of the oldest cypress documented that was ever harvested. (there are older still living). one piece went to the State Legislators chambers. This is the missing piece.
A few weeks after the visit by Mr Mullins, Mullins called and asked Clay Schexnayder to return the board to him stating it was donated to the legislature and because it is no longer in the state capitol, he wanted it. This was shortly before Schexnayder left office and state property was inventoried, packed and moved by the state.
Somewhere during this, the board disappeared. This board is at least 3' x 17' and won't be concealed easily.
Getting indicted without evidence of Schexnayder actually having this artifact or being seen with it, is pretty sketchy. I'd look at the guy that wanted it first.

I haven't had a brake tag in about two years. Granted I don't drive a Jalopy. I noticed cops like pulling over hoopties though.

No proof at all, The piece somehow does not have a state bar code on it. Sooooooo, when movers cleaned out Schexnayders office they could have
1) Left it because it wasn't on the inventory list.
2) Stole it themselves.
3) Gave it to Mullins,
4 Mullins took it believing he owns it.
5) The building owners took it
FYI, we ( Garyville Timbermill Museum) have 4 more pieces of that board in a secure place. But they are not as striking as the missing one. That piece was one an inch thick x 17' x 3'.

just go cut another cypress piece off a tree in Maurepas and be done with it

He’s not disputing that it was last seen at his Gonzales office. He’s also saying it was given to him to display at that office, but that has been refuted. It also wasn’t on the list of government property that he had in his office so that means it shouldn’t have even been there.
So: it’s a big arse board - not something that can simply be misplaced. He agrees it was in the office “when he moved out.” He didn’t notify the state that he had the government property at the location. The property manager says nothing was in there and they aren’t in possession of it.

The board had no state inventory number on it. The board has moved around from speaker to speaks office over the years. Schexnayder told the whole world it was in his office and frequently showed it off.
I don't believe he has it. There
are more than one person saying it was on the wall the day the state showed up to take state property back to B.R.
Mullins seems sketchy.

he is the uncle of my childhood friend. I went to his house a couple time as a kid for parties or something, it was a long time ago. The man had some impressive homes.
