I know that if we still don't know by January, we are prob going for a coach in the playoffs, etc.

But say we were hiring a coach at another team - is it usually announced during the season? Or after that team's season is over?

Depends on how the coach's contract is structured, but typical as soon as the regular season is over.

If it is a coach not in the playoffs or a conference championship game or even the NFL, he will likely be announced Thanksgiving weekend...otherwise, we wait longer...

During and after Bowl/Playoff season

It's easy to figure out what's what. The longer LSU waits to announce it's either become a shite show or the future HC is still actively coaching bowl/CFB or NFL playoff wise

The dates of the last 9 coaching hire announcements at LSU (excepting Stovall due to sudden death of Bo Rein):

Bo Rein November 29, 1979
Bill Arnsparger December 2, 1983
Mike Archer December 2, 1986
Curly Hallman November 28, 1990
Gerry DiNardo December 12, 1994
Nick Saban November 30, 1999
Les Miles January 3, 2005
Ed Orgeron November 26, 2016
Brian Kelly November 30, 2021

Notice a pattern. The only real outlier was Les Miles and that was because of the late date that Saban chose to leave LSU to go to the NFL.

There are approx. 15 current openings and none have been filled. We are still in the firing stage of the college coaching change cycle, more to come. Look for hirings to start being annnounced immediately after the end of the regular season.

Or it means that Verge and company screwed up the coaching search and are scrambling to find someone from the leftovers that Arky, Auburn, Penn State, etc, didn't want.
