My Instagram feed has been flooded with Edmund Fitzgerald reels. I guess that’s why.

This is a true ballad in the traditional sense written by a true balladeer. What Lightfoot did with some simple chords and haunting melody is, IMO, profoundly moving. He tells such a story about the loss of life and those left behind.

I'm a sucker for a story song, and this is one of my favorites.

May they all. mariners and balladeer, rest in peace.

Lightfoot was apparently sailed the Great Lakes recreationally himself, which particularly informs the lyrics

he read of the tragedy in a Newsweek article two weeks later, then wrote and recorded the song the following month
