Turnpike Troubadours did a great cover of this in Cleveland on Saturday.

I honestly did not realize that it was in 75. I was thinking much earlier.

My Instagram feed has been flooded with Edmund Fitzgerald reels. I guess that’s why.

What is amazing as well is there have been no sinkings of lake freighters since.

This is a true ballad in the traditional sense written by a true balladeer. What Lightfoot did with some simple chords and haunting melody is, IMO, profoundly moving. He tells such a story about the loss of life and those left behind.
I'm a sucker for a story song, and this is one of my favorites.
May they all. mariners and balladeer, rest in peace.

Lightfoot was apparently sailed the Great Lakes recreationally himself, which particularly informs the lyrics
he read of the tragedy in a Newsweek article two weeks later, then wrote and recorded the song the following month
