2025-2026 Baton Rouge Zydeco Hockey Thread

Figured we can spin off the NHL thread and have a mod eventually anchor this to the bottom of MSB.
Season already underway and the Zydeco have dropped 4 in a row after opening the season with a W. They'll split up a home/away series between Biloxi on Friday and Saturday this weekend before a 2 week break.
I know the team/lease/whatever contract they have is supposed to end after this year, so hopefully enough fan/financial support can give us at least a 2026-2027 season (unless this has changed.)

We just got a team this year, the Pee Dee Icecats in the same league. Haven’t had a chance to go to one this year but they are averaging between 4,000-4,500 people. People said it’s pretty decent hockey. Hopefully people will go out and support their teams. We use to have an ECHL team years ago and that was fun to watch.

Zephyrs was likely a play on words from the city Zephyrhills, FL, when the Marlins owned the organization.

Unfortunately, just like the Kingfish, ownership is shite, and the team is shite, again. I'm afraid another losing season will doom this franchise. Sucks b/c BR has done well supporting them despite their lack of wins.

Yes. Lost in the wild card game last year.
This year's team is significantly less talented than last year.

Forwards aren't bad but the defense outside of our top pair, and goaltending sucks. We can skate but we get pushed around the ice.
Also, no league veterans want to play here because of all the sketchy crap with ownership and previous coaches, so we can't really improve our situation unless we find a diamond in the rough coming from college.
Also, we have a ridiculous track record of trading away good players and getting nothing in return.

Zydeco hired Gary Gill this morning as Director of Hockey Operations.
Gill was the HC at Monroe last season.
This tells me our new HC has zero connections in this league and can't pull talent. Either that, or he can't evaluate veteran talent at this level.
Let's hope it makes a difference with our reputation among the league at signing free agents.
