President Trump’s Answer to GOP Election Losses: End the Filibuster

WASHINGTON—President Trump urged Republican senators to jettison the filibuster to pass GOP-backed legislation and preserve power in Congress after his party suffered losses in key races during Tuesday’s elections.
At a breakfast with GOP senators at the White House, the president argued that lowering the 60-vote threshold for passing most legislation in the chamber would allow the GOP to rack up policy victories that would boost its political prospects heading into next year’s midterm elections. The president also said that terminating the filibuster is the only way to end the government shutdown that has stretched on for 36 days and is now the longest in history.
“We have to get the country open,” Trump said, adding that failing to end it would be a “tragic mistake.” With the filibuster eliminated, the GOP could “pass legislation at levels you’ve never seen before and it will be impossible to beat us,” ticking off proposals to restrict mail-in voting and mandate that voters be required to present identification before casting ballots.
Trump is facing resistance to eliminating the filibuster from prominent Senate Republicans, including Majority Leader John Thune (R., S.D.), who have defended the rule, saying it will rein in Democratic excesses when control of the Senate changes hands. Adjusting the filibuster rule would require a simple majority in the Senate, where Republicans have a 53-47 margin.
Trump argued that Democrats plan to eliminate the filibuster anyway—so Republicans should do it first. In his remarks, he predicted that if Democrats take control of Congress they will move to make Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico into states—likely adding four Democratic senators and more blue Electoral College votes—and attempt to add more liberal justices to the Supreme Court, steps some progressives have urged. He said that ending the filibuster now could keep Republicans in power indefinitely.
“It’s going to be a very, very bad situation, and it’s done. It’s done as soon as they attain power,” Trump said. But, he said, “If we do what I’m saying…they’ll most likely never attain power, because we will have passed every single thing that you can imagine.”

Republicans mostly greeted Trump’s remarks on the filibuster with awkward silence, as television cameras panned to show a blank-faced Thune and unsmiling Sen. Susan Collins (R., Maine).
quote:
Vice President JD Vance offered his own autopsy report of the election results, posting on social media that Republicans will need to work on turning out their base and “focus on the home front,” including voter concerns about the economy.

Trump's toast. He may not get his agenda past republicans now. We all know that ending the filibuster will end in disaster for the republicans when the dems come back to power. And because they hate Trump and MAGA, they will likely do away with it anyway.

Yes because dems would only end it if the GOP did
Because they fight fair
We must always be fair in war

Anyone who thinks the current crop of Democrats will preserve the filibuster once they regain power is delusional.

Agreed, if they don’t frick that up somehow. They (Democrats) aren’t exactly known as smooth and effective operators these days. If they do something beneficial for themselves, it’s usually by accident, again, these days.
But anyway, so if you’re correct about the bolded part, then why not beat them to the punch and do what can be done, while it can be done? In fact, under your scenario (one that’s certainly not impossible, it would almost seemingly be negligence not to beat them to the punch. No, not to “win,” but to do as much good as possible, while it’s possible. And yes, for the deeper thinkers out there, I do realize “good” can be a relative term.

He's right that they should remove it to get the government going again, but he didn't go far enough. I posted this in another thread:
There's a path there, the GOP in the Senate just has to rent enough balls to walk it.

First, some foundational knowledge on the subject.
Cloture is not anywhere in the Constitution, it's a rule created by the Senate (Senate XXII). As such it can (and has) been adjusted (the threshold was lowered by Democrats in 2013 to where they needed only a simple majority vote to pass judicial and administration nominees, effectively removing it). It can be removed and re-added by only a simple majority vote (51).
With that out of the way, the GOP could make a massive move by voting to remove or lower it to simple majority (which is essentially no different than removing it), then return it back to 60. While most Democrats (if not all) would vote against the lowering/removal, not a single one will vote against its reinstatement.
This would give some incredibly rhetorical ground to the GOP for stating (rightly) they used the "nuclear option" to re-fund SNAP and federal employees because the Democrats would rather those groups suffer than give up their quest to fund free healthcare for illegals. And then you remind voters of that next year in the mid-terms.
There's a path there, the GOP in the Senate just has to rent enough balls to walk it.
