So I'm 50. I have no issue day to day conversations for work or at home. But when I get in situations like restaurants or an event with music playing in background I can't hear shite.

I bought a pair of the so called best OTC hearing aids just for these events. One question I have is with expensive hearing aids does everything sound as artificial as it does with these OTC aids? im trying to get used to them but man. It seems like only the high pitched noises are amplified.

I mean the work, but shite, unlocking the door with a key shouldn't sound like I'm inside the door knob. The Styrofoam Canes boxes rubbing together was driving me nuts on the way home.

I know I have aids

I’ve tried my father’s $3000 hearing aids for kicks. Everything sounds slightly like it’s inside of a tin can. But better than not hearing.

The dog chewed up my dad's prescription hearing aids so he tried the OTC kind. Like you, they didn't filter out the background noise, so he shelled out for prescriptions ones again.

This board will soon be filled with threads about hearing aids, the best adult diapers, and which Medicare part B plan is best.

The high pitched sounds are what most people lose first so that is what is amplified.

The high priced aids have an app for your phone that contains something like an equalizer so you can customize the frequencies that are amplified in each ear. They also contain things like Bluetooth so you can connect your phone or tv directly them, which is cool as hell.

I bought 3 or 4 different pairs of the less expensive ones and all they did was amplified sound and not filter out noise.

About 5 years ago, I bought some Costco hearing aids for around $1,500 and was shocked as to how well voices became clearer and began to notice sounds that I knew were there but had not been hearing them.

Noticeable were birds, footsteps, and pages being turned in books. I was amused that when I was folding money, I could hear the bills being sorted.

Also, my hearing aids link to my phone and I listen to podcasts and talk without even lifting the phone. Like airPods.

I guess we could be talking about women’s rights, gay rights, trans rights, racism, feminism, and all the other ism’s. Nah, let’s not.

Phonak.

They now have 4 behind the ear varieties but understand that the Phillips brand is supposed to be the better.

You get what you pay for. Hearing aids are like computers…..the better you get….the better they perform.

Part of the reason for higher cost is the time/service you get from an Audiologist. See if they will let you try a pair for a day or so? Mine did.

I turn 60 later this month, so yes, I am a bit ahead of most on here. About 3 years ago I got hearing aids as a Christmas gift for my wife as she was tired of repeating herself. I have tinnitus along with some hearing loss, and hearing aids don't cure the tinnitus but the hearing aids definitely help overall. I couldn't bring myself to spring for the $5000 pair the Dr's office offered so I go the Costco set for $1500 and they have worked pretty well.

Best advice, don't go cheap. Buy the best you can afford, keep them clean and periodically tuned up. My wife would tell you the difference between cheap and more expensive was night and day. My wife's hearing aids can be linked to her phone and the tv as well and the charge lasts all day and into the night. That is an important feature not to be overlooked.

Protip: if you don't want hearing aids in your future, wear hearing protection to LSU home games. Less so for the crowd noise than the ear splitting sound system. People will think you're a dork; pay them no mind.

—but if you show up after half time, No problems with noise levels.
