Are we supposed to forget about the absurd buyout Woodward gave Orgeron?

There was absolutely no reason to have such a large buyout (or any buyout really) in his contract. NO ONE was going to hire Orgeron away from LSU.
Did he deserve a raise after 2019? Yes. But adding that stupid buyout served no purpose but to hamstring LSU in the event that he crashed and burned (which let's be honest, was always a strong possibility with Ed).
Between two football coaches at LSU, Woodward is responsible for $70 million in buyouts. On top of that, the other profit maker at LSU, men's basketball, has been a disaster.
A couple of good hires in other sports don't make up for his utter failure in the ones that drive the revenue train at LSU.

Woodward didn't give any buyouts without knowing with 100% certainty that his billionaire donor buddies would back him.
Now, being careless with that goodwill could come back to bite you. And maybe that's exactly what happened with Woodward

I agree with this said the fact that Woodward was a master at keeping things in house and it's been less than 24 hours and we've already had a dumpster fire press conference about the next search.

But, but he deserved a massive raise because he won the NC!!!!
Smart, Saban, etc. etc, weren't/aren't paid so much as a "reward". It's to make sure they stayed at their schools. No one, at least no one with better resources, was taking Orgeron after 2019.
It's these dumb extensions that generally get ADs in a mess.

Absolutely- there has to be accountability for the finances- wasting millions on buyouts- that $$$$could have gone to NIL for better players/ recruits

These types of comments are really dumb. This impacts the universities ability to spend money. Posts like this pretend that there is an endless supply of money. This absolutely has a negative impact on the school

You’re supposed to forget about everything and just melt

The university pays $0 towards athletics. In fact, the school RECEIVES funds from the AD.

Who the frick cares. its what you do to maintain a top tier athletic department. It is the reason that you can attract top talent. And the idea of you complaining about the buyout number is the funniest shite ever. You and 99.99999% of the entire fricking population pay ZERO DOLLARS> Be fricking thankful that rich people love LSU. DAMMIT

These buyouts are what the market demands to hire a good coach. We are not agreeing to them for altruistic reasons, friend.

For a good fundraiser, there is absolutely endless money. Hope we get another great fundraiser in the AD seat.
Woodward got that buyout money in a day, before Landry injected himself.

I mean looking back, O was a hot commodity at that point after assembling and coaching one of the best teams of all time.
Burrow literally said he deserved a "lifetime contract" during his Heisman speech.
In hindsight it looks bad, but who knew O would mail it in after the natty and things would unravel so quickly.

No. He wasn't.

Woodward stepped away from the Business-person role of an AD when he let his emotions control his decision making having heard the passionate Joe Burrow Heisman Trophy Ceremony speech.
While pretty much everyone knew and acknowledged the best thing that Orgeron did as a coach was to:
1. convince Burrow to transfer to LSU; and then to stand back and stay out of everyone else's way; and
2. listen and acted upon the strong endorsement by Sean Payton with the hire of Joe Brady.
He was a CEO coach where all of the stars aligned. Unfortunately, Kelly was also a CEO coach, but the stars very obviously did not align.
A good executive always steps back and weighs all circumstances and potential ramification [positive and negative] on critically important decisions. Scott simply couldn't have done the same as concerns the Orgeron extension. He also should have learned from the Orgeron extension mistake and not duplicate the same mistakes in the hire of Kelly.
What's worse is Woodward probably wasn't presented a "binder" that included all of the players and coaches Kelly would bring along with him to LSU. If Kelly and / or his agent was lying to Woodward [since he only brought his OC with him and a punter], then Woodward also didn't demonstrate what a good executive is able to accomplish in sniffing out the puffing / bullshite upfront in the middle of a deal . . .
