Genuine question about BK’s bye week vacation

I’m confused. Josh Pate reported that BK took a vacation during our first bye week. But Frank Wilson said today that the team practiced on their first day of the second bye week unless I misunderstood. So does that mean that Kelly took a vacation when the team was still practicing? What am I missing? That would seem to be an insane head scratcher for a coach to skip out on practice for a vacation because it was a bye week. Did they not actually practice during the first bye week?

Teams usually practice for part of the bye week then get some sort of long weekend. It’s not uncommon for coaches to take some sort of vacation during a bye week

I’ve never heard of a successful college coach going on vacation mid season.
Take a day off during a bye week, possibly! No way a coach leaves and goes out of town!

Lane Kiffin goes to his house in Florida during the bye week

Steve Spurrier did this with Bob Stoops, he was then his dc, the bye week before they played Florida State one year

Supposedly Spurrier used to hit the beach on bye weeks. Bill King was talking about it on his radio show yesterday.

Let me say it this way, a championship coach doesn’t check out for 4-5 days mid season.
Let me ask this question: Saban, Meyer, Smart. Are these guys taken over 4-6 days mid season.
Can you win 8-9 games? Heck yeah! Can you win a championship when you aren’t 110% sold out? Nope!
Even Coach O was Ax to the grind in 2019.
Your players see when you check out! Your coaches see it and ultimately the fans see it!
At 10 Mil per year, yes, you work 150 days straight with little vacation. Vacation in the SEC means 3-4 loses if you are a top contender!

If you listened 15 seconds later he also said
usually a bye week they would give them days off

Spurrier was not an especially hard worker. He admitted to it.
Winning cures a lot of ills and masks problems. As long as you're winning, nobody is going to care about your vacations.
But when you're getting your arse kicked by Ole Miss and Vandy, and Tamu at home, you better not be anywhere near the beach.

We (LSU under Coach Saban) used to practice nearly every day of bye weeks. It was pretty much a normal practice week, typically used for fundamental practice and prep for a particular future opponent.

How many coaches do you track during their bye weeks?

I’ve heard Stoops tell the a story about being at the beach during a bye week. Goes something like, him and Spurrier floating on tubes in the ocean and Spurrier looks over and says “Hey Bobby, you think them boys at Tennessee are having as much fun as we are right now”

This is overblown. BK said on Finebaum that he took some time to take his wife shopping.
