When we discussing coaching candidates can we actually talk bout realistic options

Ngl I’m tired of hearing “ call Saban and make him tell you no “ the man is 74 years old and was unhappy with the NIL climate he’s not coming out of retirement discussing him as an option feels like a gigantic waste of time.
Same with dan lanning. He’s not leaving the Nike money situation at Oregon.

Most of the names on every list I've seen have candidates with zero chance of taking the job.

Thats the thing with realistic expectations. This idea is what YOU view as realistic. You do not know the coaches motivations or reasons they would want change.
Are those two options likely? hell no. But nothing is unrealistic.

It's been reported he's asking questions about what happens when Phil Knight passes (he's 87). Lanning knows that blank check might only be around as long as Knight is alive. He may also want to coach in the best league in the country and test his chops. LSU is a place that you can do that successfully.

LSU is the one job that might make him think about it. That's why they reached out already. If the GOAT is available and willing, you make it happen.

You really think LSU is going to pay the 20 million that would be owed to Oregon to take lanning? Or that Lanning would forfeit all of his Nike stock to leave. Ain't hapening.

I think if LSU believes that Lanning is the target they would absolutely pay the buyout. I do not believe that Lanning would leave Oregon unless there was something other than money driving him.
My point was that it's silly to pretend any of us know for certain what a coach is or isn't going to do. It is very possible that Lanning wants to go back to the SEC as a HC. It's possible that when the 87 year old billionaire passes away, the money influx into that program slows down and they come back to earth and then it might be too late. Lanning's stock is as hot as it can be right now. He is on the short list of every college job, so it will be up to him to see if it's a fit.
All that said, no, I do not believe he will choose to leave Oregon, but it's not a silly notion for LSU to make a call or try.

No one thought Mulkey would come home to coach, she had been asked multiple times before.
It never hurts to ask again and again.

Going into this LSU HAD to have had someone already lined up or else the timing just don't make total sense
