I think BK phoned it in after he realized how badly he wasted JD in 2023

We had a defense so bad that year there was barely a point in punting the ball and LSU still went 9–3 because JD and our offense was that good. Let that sink in.
If Brian Kelly ever had a real shot at a championship, it was with the best player and offense he’s ever coached. You swap that 2023 offense with 2019, and maybe they don’t go 15–0, but they’re still winning the championship that year including just as bad of a blowout against OU.
That had to be crushing, knowing you wasted something that special. Then trying to rebuild around an infuriatingly terrible QB… I think the wind was just taken out of his sails. That was the shot, and he knew it. Not this year, not last year, 2023 was it.

I have, and it sucks to think about still.
But I agree. BK blew his chance at a NC. I think he thought he had a legitimate shot this year too, but this year has been strange!

Whatever happened, he wasn't this guy anymore by the time he got to BR.
Most 60+ year old men with tens of millions in the bank aren't as cutthroat as their younger selves, so I guess it's not that big of a surprise.

Kelly always struck me as the guy to blame someone else instead of thinking to himself "hmmm maybe I need to change some things".
Going to bat for Sloan was an el-oh-el moment

Not winning a championship when you have Daniels, Malik Nabers and Kayshon Boutte is certainly a failure. That offense was not far off at all from the 2019 offense. I think that team led by JD would also go 15-0 with the 2019 defense.

I mentioned in another thread that it seems like LSU's future was wrapped up in Bryce Underwood. When he unexpectedly got "bought" by Michigan right before early signing day, I'm sure there was a sense of loss in the program that was invisible but real. The program has seemed lost ever since.
Just an opinion.

I think he phoned it in after he finally beat Alabama.

2023 was his shot and he blew it. Also on offense he had Brian Thomas Jr. Will Campbell, Emery Jones, Miles Frazier and Garrett, Josh Williams
If he kept the original defensive staff intact, he wins it all. Baker, Raymond, Daronte Jones, Andre Carter.

The underwood flip was soul crushing go the program. Nobody saw it coming which was prob naive by the staff since flips can happen but they truly went all in on that kid they had no backup plan qb wish when he left
