LSU Tigers football coach Brian Kelly may not survive the day in Baton Rouge.

The Athletic’s Stewart Mandel stated that by the time college football’s top 25 rankings came out on Sunday, LSU won’t be ranked, and the 64-year-old could be $53.3 million richer from his buyout clause. Kelly’s team lost 49-25 to the TAMU Aggies on Saturday night in Death Valley to fall to 5-3 on the year. This was their second straight loss and third of the season.

quote:

AD Scott Woodward may not have the patience to keep Kelly, Mandel writes, based on how he fired Ed Orgeron two years after engineering the magical 2019/2020 College Football Playoff National Championship run.

“No. 20 LSU (5-3, 2-3) has lost three of its past four, and will no longer be ranked come Sunday afternoon. We’ll see whether Kelly, who has a staggering $53 million buyout, will still be employed by then,” Mandel wrote.

quote:

Mandel described the top reasons Kelly will be fired, which range from football strategy to simply having a personality that doesn’t fit in the Deep South.

“Woodward is the same AD who canned Ed Orgeron less than two years removed from a national title. Kelly was hired to win one himself, but his program has only grown farther from contention with each season. LSU went all in on its 2025 team — Kelly said in August the program had tripled its payroll this year to $18 million — and thus expected returns.

quote:

“Compounding all of that, Kelly is famously … what’s the word … divisive? Saturday night, the cameras showed him yelling in quarterback Garrett Nussmeier’s face, cursing out offensive coordinator Joe Sloan over the headset and trying to throw that same headset in disgust, only to realize it was attached to him.

LSU is off next week before visiting yet another top-five foe, Alabama. There are $53 million reasons to assume he’ll still be on the sideline, but as we’ve seen over and over this season, schools always find the money.

quote:

In terms of a football fit, the results speak for themselves. The Tigers have gotten worse since their SEC Championship appearance in 2022. Worse yet, the team’s payroll has ballooned as NIL has expanded.

The results don’t fit the investment. LSU fans will do everything they personally can to ensure Kelly is gone from this program as soon as possible.

If national guys are saying things like this, hopefully that means there’s a little smoke.

Kelly needs to be gone yesterday.

The fact we haven’t fired Sloan yet maybe means we are considering firing Kelly

I really don’t think Woodward gets to dump his 100 million dollar choice for head coach and hire another.

Woody didn't hire Oregon and give him a ridiculous contract. Firing BK after just 4 years means Woody has to admit that he fricked up bad. Will his ego let him do that?

Promote Frank to interim to drag the season across the finish line. I think he’s the only one on staff with HC experience.

LSU does not have the balls, they’d rather laugh at the fans and plunder our money, just keep making excuses. Every program is passing us by and feels like nobody at LSU cares

The difference is Woodward handpicked Kelly and gave him the stupid contract.

I really don't see anything happening until LSU hires a president.

I see no benefit in keeping Kelly. Next year will be worse. Once the team bails on him when the portal opens up, it will be a total rebuild with at the very least a new offensive staff. Keeping Kelly will get ugly next year.

I mean, if there is one person in America who ought to be aware of what swallowing the huge buyout and hiring the right coach could mean, it ought to be someone who was previously the athletic director at Texas A&M.

Everybody saw last night what can happen if you get this right.

LSU shouldn’t have the expensive arse patience it takes to have Woody Woodcock remain as AD after the massive money failures he’s been responsible for in LSU’s two biggest money making sports. (Both men’s basketball and football are expensive dumpster fires)

Kelly has lost the support of the fans, the city, and I'd be willing to bet, the LSU administration, although they might not publicly admit it yet. I know his buyout is huge and from what I gather, he's an a-hole of a human being, but there's something to be said about being stuck in an environment where you are universally despised by everyone around you. Kelly knows we all want him gone. Maybe that will incentivize him to agree to a negotiated exit strategy.

this is a key aspect in all of this... LSU sorta can't fire Kelly right now... they may want to, and they may even be able to pony up the money, but procedurally, they can't right now

I'm in full agreement with you, just saying the backside of this thing isn't as cut and dry as it would normally be. I also would expect Landry to push against firing him behind closed doors.
