My Umbrella carrier just dropped me because my neighbor made a homeowners claim against me when my tent for my boat got tossed around by wind and damaged his RV.

Who yall recommend?

I got one with Zach at The Mathews Agency - my rate with State Farm tripled a couple months ago and he was able to get me a way better rate with an umbrella policy that wasn't tied to my car or house insurance. I don't know much about umbrella, but just know I need one and he had a great option for me.

Interesting tidbit I just learned: Now need a 500 CSL policy instead of a 250/500 policy for umbrella for carriers in LA now.

I don't understand thos statement... one of the things an umbrella does is extends your home and auto liability to the umbrella limits. If its not tied to your home and auto what is it doing? If u seriously injure someone in an auto accident will it not pay?

My advice is... if you need an umbrella you need to understand an umbrella. Have someone you trust that's in the business to fully explain how it works.

State Farm. It's expensive. Like $200 a month. RLI is like $1300

A month? Or the year?

It should be more like $350 for a whole year at $1m. I feel like they wouldn't even write the policy at that risk level considering how even a minor fender bender not involving another vehicle can be a problem.

I did a quick RLI quote online for 1m and it was 1700/year. Which was more than double what I had with usaa. 2 cars, boat, house @ 1m

Waiting to hear back from Hudson.

Farmers and Progressive won’t offer umbrella without also doing auto and no one is beating usaa for price and how they treat customers (despite them dropping me on umbrella)

Do you have to have a special rider to cover the pool? It wouldn't be covered if the policy was for your home and vehicles?

I'm revieweing my Umbrella Policy now to see if it excludes the pool.

That's wild. I paid them $237 for $1m just a couple months ago

Maybe it's crazy LA rates. Wouldn't surprise me. Just crossing the border out of LA felt like a 50% drop in car insurance when I did that 10 years ago. Such an awful insurance market.

Don't they farm it out to RLI anyway?

yes they farm it out but handle customer service and they told me i have to get auto tied to the umbrella, meaning I have to have my auto with them so i switched and saved a ton.

I meant it as it wasn't tied to my car our house insurance. It didn't require me to have them together like State Farm's does. It does extend the coverage, but wasn't required to be all with the same carrier.

Yes, companies like RLI will write "standalone" policies but it's tied back to your home/car insurance in the sense you have to have the proper coverage for those for the umbrella to be effective with the issuer of it. I figured that's what you meant.

Ya, I was letting him (and any reader) know if he's approaching GEICO for umbrella only (if they even do that I don't recall from when GEICO had my auto/home), it's worth just going straight to RLI as well for a quote.

Umbrella policies have gotten caught up in the greed cycle and have probably quadrupled in the last few years. The insurance industry has lost its collective mind (I’m sure that will be a bat signal for someone on this board to come defend big insurance).
