According to Sagarin, LSUs SOS is 9. Vandy is 67
Vandy rush d rank - #16, 99 ypg
LSU rush o rank - #106, 112 ypg

I checked Vandy's opponents rushing
Va Tech decent opponents - Va Tech rushing yards in each game and ypg in those games
vs South Carolina 115
vs Vanderbilt 92
vs NC State 254
vs Wake Forest 152
vs Georgia Tech 193
161ypg

SCar opponents
vs Virginia Tech 119
vs Vanderbilt 86
vs Missouri -9
vs Kentucky 178
vs LSU 193
113ypg

Ga St
vs Ole Miss 191
vs Memphis 49
vs Vanderbilt 32
vs James Madison 37
vs App State 78
77ypg

Ut St
vs UTEP 127
vs Texas A&M 78
vs Air Force 186
vs Vanderbilt 119
vs Hawai'i 166
135ypg

Alabarf
Florida St 87
UL Monroe 212
Wisconsin 72
Georgia 117
Vanderbilt 146
Missouri 125
126ypg

Those teams against Vandy - their ypg from the above games, delta (opponent national rank rushing ypg)
Va Tech 92 yards 161ypg -69 (52)
SCar 86 113 -27 (105)
Ga St 32 77 -45 (131)
Ut St 119 135 -16 (82)
Al 146 126 20 (92)
27 ypg

So Vandy is holding their decent opponents to an average of 27 yards less than their opponents average against their decent opponents.

For comparison
LSU opponent - yards (national run d rank/ypg)
vs Clemson 108 (21/105)
vs Louisiana Tech 128 (19/102)
vs Florida 96 (42/129)
vs Ole Miss 75 (76/158)
vs South Carolina 166 (87/164)
114ypg

Things that stood out to me
Positive - Florida, LA Tech, Clemson have better rush d than I expected. Is Vandy really as good as those 3 against the run?
Vandy let Bama get 20+ yards over their average against decent teams
LSU is not great but, Vandy's opponents' rushing offenses have not been great either
LSU showed signs of life against SCar

Neutral
Vandy's performance against Va Tech was impressive but the Hokies are absolutely putrid

Negative
Vandy has been solid against the run overall
If LSU averages 114ypg and Vandy holds LSU 20-30 yards under that, I would say that's not a good sign for LSU
The OM game for LSU is a huge, huge red flag

I think this game is identical to the OM game - it hinges on LSUs ability to run the ball. If LSU can hit their average, 114, I think LSU wins. Fall below that like at OM, that's likely a loss

Man I appreciate the effort you put into this post, I really do. But you did all of that research and just came away with “if LSU can run the ball we win, if we can’t then we lose”

Solid stuff.

However, there are some intangibles there. Injuries, one off plays, etc.

Still, the song remains the same…if LSU runs the ball, they win.

How about over 600 yards passing and 65 points allowed in their last two games, one of which was Utah St?

They scored 10 points, dummy. We contained Sellers and when you do that, their offense don’t score many points.

Durham being out for the OM game ended up being big. He looked pretty good vs USC.

Vandy's pass defense sucks. Get Aaron Anderson back next week and with TD Green coming to life we have a #1/Green slot A Anderson, burner (Brown), and slot #2 Parker, we should be able to put up great numbers even with Nuss turning the ball over.

Also, while we still aren't good on short yardage, we have at least found something in the run game. IMO, we should run MVB on short yardage. I still remember Oklahoma St running a 2 QB system in 2015 to great success. Their pro style non runner Rudolph was great with an int problem, but their backup dual threat was a playmaker. Both played in all 13 games. The backup threw for almost 800 yards with 13 TDs to 1 int. He also ran for 360 yards and 13 TDs. It just sucks that their defense was trash.

I say we put MVB in the redzone with with 5 yards out and put him in on the field on like 3rd and anything 3 and under.

No. I said it looks like LSU needs to run the ball a certain amount and gave stats that suggest that.

I also wanted to find out where Vandy was statistically as a rush d

Plus it's good to put hard numbers against the eyeball test to see how objective it is.

I wanted to look at LSUs biggest struggle. LSU should be able to get some yards through the air.

Sagarin has LSU a slight favorite. There's no doubt OM is a better team than Vandy. The rebs have played a tougher schedule. Are the reasons LSU lost to OM correctable? The SCar game seems to suggest they are at least a little.

I saw people complaining about getting the TO but not converting. LSU also had some decent long drives so it wasn't all bad and the rushing yards weren't terrible.

While not universal, teams are usually better at defending against offenses that mimic the ones they practice against.

Vandy is a run-first team, and its passing game is built off that rushing attack.

Vandy is currently 95th in the country in opponents' passing yards per game, and as OP pointed out, outside of Bama, they haven't faced offensive juggernauts.

LSU will have to run the ball to keep Vandy honest, especially if they deploy 8 man coverage looks like Ole Miss did, but LSU's ultimate path to success will be through the air. Keep feeding Green (should be getting minimum 10 targets per game), spread them out, and make them guard LSU's athletes in space.

While Vandy did beat the shite out of South Carolina, it is worth noting that Sellers didn't play the entire second half of that game. Their offense is limited with him, without him, they are dead.

Vandy's pass defense sucks
There's no doubt being able to pass will help the box count.

LSU hasn't been attacking the intermediate routes between the hashes a ton and it's letting teams sit in 2 high. Getting AA back for those digs, etc, should help for those 2nd level passes. If you can force them to get to single high, then you have your outside shots open up.

I know people are complaining about hilton and the SCar drop is legit criticism but, he's been drawing PI also which is goal #2 if you can't get #1 which is a catch

Then how about putting the run game second? Start out throwing to get Nuss and the guys on track, make Vandy loosen up the front line and hopefully pop some good runs or even a RB out the backfield.

Regardless, the LSU offense has to put more points on the board. LSU has played the two worst offenses in the SEC and lost to Ole Miss. LSU has games against the #2 (Vandy), #5, #6, & #7 offenses coming up. The D can only do so much.

SC actually lost that game because of 4 turnovers. They actually had a few more total yards than vandy did.
