Alum and is from that area. Has coached in that part of the country before at Temple. Trouble is I don’t know if he’s truly any better than Franklin at the end of the day. Would probably win 9- 10 games a year but don’t know if he’s the one to get you over the hump

That’s not an upgrade. If anything it’s $50M for a lateral

He's in the same conference and has had the same big game problems. Even his great year at Baylor their big win was beating an average Texas team.

He's not any better than Franklin....maybe worse. I'm hoping this hyper what have you done for me lately activity starts to come back and start biting these P5 programs in the arse. Fire one guy, pay him out not to coach, then boosters in a hissy fit do it again and suddenly they get on the hook for a commitment for 70 million a year.....because they absolutely positively could not sleep at night because their favorite team has a down season or two.

In the case of Penn State they've essentially done.....NOTHING since Jan.2 1987. In that respect Franklin is possibly marginally better than Joe Pa since that time

Why though? Perhaps he's the best they can get. But he hasn't shown at all that he'd be an upgrade over Franklin

I'm kind of surprised at how many people are downplaying Rhule. He was a CC board darling a few years ago, and has never had an opportunity to take over at a place ready to win now.

He's only in year 3 at Nebraska, which was his breakout year at Temple and Baylor, and he has a manageable enough schedule to win at least 10 games. Who else is a realistic option for Penn State? Any hire they make is going to be a risk.

I really dont understand the Rhule love. Guy had good runs at Temple and Baylor. Since, failed NFL tenure and average at best at Nebraska. If I were a PSU fan/alum, there's no way I could accept paying 50 mil to fire one coach and another 50 mil to hire fricking Matt Rhule. Pissed off is what I'd be. But hey I'm not a PSU fan so let them wallow in their own misery. They deserve the misery for the Paterno/Sandusky debacle.

These statements kind of conflict. You’re saying Penn State has done nothing since winning a national title, but also saying you hope boosters keep getting impulsive and canning people so it bites them in the arse.

I’d argue Penn State has done a few things since January 1987 (all jokes aside about the scandal). The national title or bust idea is what has pushed CFB to this modern era and Wild West feeling of paying athletes, lowering academic standards, etc.

One thing about it. Whoever does get it will have a cakewalk of a schedule next year.

Rhule, Elko, and Mullen would be the three "local" names to watch.

Surely Elko is not leaving A&M for Penn St., right? I read another article that mentioned Mullen. Rhule has done well everywhere except the NFL and Nebraska. I thought they would have a better list than that.

Yeah I certainly wouldn't expect Elko to leave - but I suspect his name will be brought up some since he's a successful college coach with ties to the area.
