A couple of weeks ago, we drove from Shreveport to Las Vegas. We got on I-40 in Amarillo and went west all the way to Kingman, AZ before heading north on Hwy 93/I-11 to Vegas. We stopped at a few times along the original Route 66, mostly in Arizona. Winslow, Meteor Crater, Williams, and Kingman. I really like the vibe of the older neon signs and touristy stuff. We're going to make that trip again in the future, and I'd like to try other places on that road. Do you have any tips or suggestions?

People think AZ and NM is flat and only sand and cacti, but it's full of mountains that will make you feel small. The four corners area is where I will move to next, so much to do in driving distance.

If you went through Kingman you were 1/2 hour away from Oatman, an old gold mining town on 66. Shops, restaurants and burros wondering the streets.

Blue Whale of Catoosa Oklahoma. Captures the spirit of Route 66 perfectly. I used to do a lot of work near it . Don't expect a lot but it is perfect for a Route 66 trip which is all about the nostalgia.

The number of HUGE animals at gas stations, souvenir shops and the like out west is staggering.

Tucumcari and Gallup. Both in New Mexico. We stayed at the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari and the El Rancho motel in Gallup.

Russel’s Truck Stop in I40 just inside the NM line at Texas. Rt. 66 runs across. The stop has a great free museum and is a clean RR

I have traveled several sections of Rte 66. So far, I rank the following from best to least favorite by state::
1. Kansas - short trip, great storied sites, great breakfast, decent dinners, and a double-handful of interesting characters.
2. Oklahoma - eastern side has sites such as the blue whale. Of all the stops I took, the whale was meh by comparison. I always tried the 'Gas Station' museums.
3. Arizona - the natural sites, such as meteor crater, was great. Winslow was what one would expect and be far from disappointing.
3. Illinois - good stops, what I would call the average Rte 66 experience.
4. California - good drive, yet not fully developed as I expected for the upcoming 100 year anniversary in 2026.
5. New Mexico, Texas, Missouri and western Oklahoma - either haven't been through them or not explored as a Rte66 trip.

Stayed last year. It was great. No luxury around but a real vintage road motel feel. Would stay again.

Blue swallow is definitely worth a stay. Tucumcari is pretty run down but definitely worth it. Also the wigwam motel in Arizona is fun too.
