Come in to work this morning, and it's business as usual with this half glass empty coworker of mine.

Never sleep good, cpap not good enough for him. Job stinks, terrified he is getting canned from his .gov job everyday (we are fed, but funded through the shutdown). Orange man REAL bad, adult kids failed to launch.

It's like working with Al Bundy and it also reminds me of the "Gloom, despair and agony" skit from Hee Haw.

Some days I just want to ask him if he has any joy in life other than offloading his negativity. He's too tired or has another baked in excuse for doing things that might have positive impact-going to the gym, walking, fishing. It's just one tragedy after another.

Sorry to gripe, needed to complain, and my wife is tired of hearing me complain about him. How does TD handle miserable people?

Counter his negativity with something positive.

Slept poorly? Thank God for coffee?
OMB? Well.. it's his last term
Adult child problems? They'll either launch eventually or be there to care for him in his old age.

Comment on beautiful weather... or say, "Hey dude, what's good today?"

Or refuse to interact with negative statements- I think the kids call it something like "grey rocking".

Find your own groove and don't let him bring you down.

Stop letting him drag you down; it’s the only aspect you control.

I have co-workers who are constantly whining about something but they will be gone soon enough. Most quit when they find out how difficult the job is. People like that tend to want easy jobs in my experience.

I usually start with trying to find a positive for them to think about- but ppl like who you are describing cannot change- or refuse to- so I just affirm their fears.

Afraid of getting canned- point out reasons why he might.

CPAP not working- “shite dude- you’re probably going to end up with a fib and die from a thrombolytic stroke”

Sort of the can’t beat ‘em- join ‘em philosophy.

Really though- I just ignore them. They take up too much of my oxygen.

You don’t. Just avoid talking to him about anything other than work.

People like that are a black hole for emotions and energy. They will drain it all out of you and never change. You, OTOH, will. Case in point:

You are becoming a signal booster for this guy. Your wife is over it and now you’re here. Stop boosting this dude’s miserable-arse signal.

hope he does.

Push him to quit, I think we are all tired of paying his salary.

Just ask him if he has any joy in life other than offloading his negativity.

He'll either change or, realizing that you aren't sympathetic to his incessant whiny, take it to someone else (and whine about you).
