NFL/CFB Obsolete Metrics and Stupid Penalty Rules

Couple things I’ve thought about for a while and want others opinions. If discussed and I’ve missed it, sorry.

>Watching SNF tonight there have been multiple not enough guys on line of scrimmage calls. Has there ever been a call like this that has ever mattered in a game ever (I mean where the player lined up not the result of the call)? These are guys inches off a line or on a line forever and I don’t think a DE or CB is going to adjust what he does based on that. If have been plays that make this so important would love to hear them.

And it’s a false narrative to begin with
1,000 yard receivers
- 2024: 24
- 2014: 23
- 2004: 24

IMO, when (not if) the NFL goes to 18 games, it may somewhat reset the benchmarks in relation to the past. IIRC, they've played a 16 game regular season since at least the early 80's. Before that was 14, so it's not like they've added a whole bunch more playing time--from 14 to 17 games.
Sort of the same story for the NCAA. Eleven games in a regular season in my childhood (early 80's). Twelve games now. Of course, we've added like 4 more championship games, but I'm not sure those count in official statistics.

Good clarification. That metric is a CFB thing not a NFL.

Penalties on each team that are of different yardages should not offset
A 5 yard offsides should not equal a 15 yard penalty
Walk them both off

Also, a penalty that is a direct result of another penalty should not count. For example, an offensive tackle holds a defensive end who clearly jumped offsides so his QB doesn't get killed.

1/2 the distance to the goal should not exist. Back them up or to the goal should be the rule. Where did 1/2 the distance come from?

Wonder about this as well. I assume it's some ancient rule that goes back to when everyone was running the wing T or something and there was more relevance

I don't think there should be a thing as an automatic first down penalty.
A 3rd and 30 should not turn into a first down based on a 10 yard penalty.

Anyone interested and knows more can totally correct this but to my understanding there are few things in play with with an illegal formation penalty.
Essentially, at most offenses can have up to 5 people eligible to receive a forward pass on any one play: anyone in the backfield and the last person on the line of scrimmage on either side. So formations are required to “declare” who the eligible receivers are to provide an opportunity for the defense to match up.

That makes sense, so therefore anyone in the slot must line up behind the LOS to essentially be considered "in the backfield" and eligible?
