How successful would a grocery store be if they didn't accept EBT?

Someone started another thread about how the grocery store experience would change if they didn't accept EBT. Which got me wondering if I could start a grocery store chain that did not accept EBT.
I'm intrigued by this thought.
I would definitely frequent a grocery store if they didn't take EBT. In fact, it would be my spot. I wouldn't even care if it was more expensive.
There's a grocery store chain in the southeast, Publix, that caters to those who want clean and organized grocery stores. Their prices are higher, but not by a lot.
I think people would go there just to avoid the cultcha.

Tony's Seafood would take a major hit.

We shop at Publix exclusively just to not deal with Walmart/Kroger

Not enough to survive. EBT is their dirty little secret. It's the lifeblood of cash flow for a grocery store

Wish we had a Publix out west. Miss those stores.

Is the store in the hood or not?

EBT is a redistribution of wealth. From the tax payers to the corporations selling the products. It is government guaranteed sales.
They would never give cash as welfare because you can’t guarantee where it goes.

Was coming to post this. Love shopping there. Stress free shopping and you don't need a tail gunner.

Groceries would suffer far more than you’d think. So would food companies. Nobody who isn’t in the grocery business really understands how much is bought on the government dime.

What if they had ebt only grocery stories?

Depends on the store.
Calvin’s has big signs up about not taking EBT.

A lot of the cards are sold below face value for cash already, unfortunately.

I do most of my grocery shopping in a smaller, upscale store in nice neighborhood and there is zero EBT element there... and it's in new orleans
and yes, it's way too expensive

If you're in Martha's Vineyard or Carmel you'd probably be just fine. Where I'm at you'd need to be in the extreme north or east of Fresno to stand a chance. The money has always moved north around here with the new developments and eastward has become a thing over the last 5 years or so out towards the Sierra foothills.
