I know this was posted 8 years ago but I thought it was funny, especially about the orange groves in central Florida. The last 15 years we've been going to Disney, I don't recall seeing 1 orange grove. When I went in HS back in the 80's, I remember seeing them everywhere around the park.

Crazy how one business built up an entire metropolitan area,

I remember nothing but orange groves starting just south of Wildwood FL all the way to just north of Orlando on both sides of the Florida Turnpike. One year, early 80s I believe, I spent the night at a delivery site in Deland FL. I awoke in my truck the next morning to the beautiful smell of orange blossoms in the air. I'll never forget how awesome that was

True, a mud hole it was, nothing but swamp.
But instead of turning it into a tourist trap, hear me out now.....

They could have turned it into a thriving community that actually grew the surrounding community instead of the tourist trap for money that goes directly to Disney and not the people living in the community.

Ah yes.

All they needed to do was just speak it and a thriving community would have appeared.

Yeah, that's it. Speak it and it happens.
Kinda like speaking Disney world and it happening. Could never work.
A sprawling network and city of a theme park. Literally the size of a city. But you're right, it could never work for normal people, they're to stupid.

What could have been done for either side of the argument, was actually done for the side that only wanted more money instead of quality of life for the people in the area.
Maybe the same thing will happen where you live some day. They'll just speak it and it will happen. Hope it's everything you have ever wanted and more.

Orange production is Florida has plummeted from over 240 million boxes in the late 1990s to a recent low of around 15-20 million boxes, a decline of over 90%. Two biggest factors were hurricanes and HLB disease.

i follow a bunch of urban explorer pages on instagram where guys take photos of all abandoned buildings and stuff. like clockwork in the comments, someone always says "cant believe humans are so wasteful, they should turn this into low income housing for crippled children and blind retards" or whatever, as if there is some all-powerful "they" somewhere just sitting on the resources to do such a thing out of thin air.

you sound like those clowns.

So I sound like those clowns when I never said what you just said? You said it and not me.
I just said to leave it up to the people who live in the area. Let them do with the land as they seem fit

Either to do. They would know better than I would or you would or any corporation would.
But somehow I said what you think I said? Yeah, I'm the clown, go shove your own words down someone else's throat hoping they will give into your stupidity.

The land owners did exactly what they wanted; they sold it to Disney for a crap load of money.

I'm still waiting for the all=powerful "they" to make Louisiana a utopia.

Disney destroyed all the nearby orange groves to punish the memory of Anita Bryant.

Urban sprawl and the impacts of hurricanes over time has affected all types of ag in Florida... not just the orange groves. Leather leaf fern grow farms, cattle farms, etc.

The Dukes must have finally been able to corner the market.

But in all seriousness, orange juice prices have gone way up and packaging has gotten smaller too. A “gallon” is now a 96oz jug. “Half gallon” sizes are 48-59 ounces depending on producer.

I always found it smart that Disney was able to buy all that land at a cheap price by hiding behind shell corporations.
